LETTER: Support alternatives to overhead power transmission lines

The Energy Transaction Act (PA 102-0662) was signed into law in September 2021. This granted Grain Belt Express the ability to construct high voltage direct current power transmission lines in Illinois. This is, unfortunately, with the use of the right of eminent domain. The proposed project has plans to build overhead transmission lines. They are unsightly to the citizens. They are disruptive to the farmers and to wildlife/animal migration patterns. Additionally, these lines are inherently subject to routine maintenance and […]

QUINN: Attention spans

Do people today really have shorter attention spans? Well, it appears that because multiple messages bombard us daily, we mentally “delete” those we don’t currently need. (This explains why some folks forget what they had for breakfast, or why I call so many of my friends “Pal.”) Latest reports – compiled by scientists who pay attention – set the average adult attention span at only eight minutes. It’s reportedly even shorter if you’re a dog, and shorter still if you’re […]

Güzelyurt: Turkey’s ‘Beautiful Land’

Güzelyurt, in the region of Cappadocia in rural Turkey, is a town that has changed little over the centuries. Exploring it, I hike steeply down into a ravine, winding through a community in the rough — where the chores of daily life seemed stuck in the Middle Ages. Then, climbing up to a hilltop perch marking the end of town, I survey the view and marvel how the honey that holds this architectural baklava together is the community of people […]

Copenhagen’s Christiania: No cars, corporations, or dead fish

Strolling through Copenhagen, I come upon a parade: ragtag soldiers-against-conformity dressed in black making their way through the bustling, modern downtown. They walk solemnly behind a WWII vintage truck blasting Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in The Wall." I've never really listened to the words until now. These "soldiers" are fighting a rising tide of conformity. They want to raise their children to be free spirits, not cogs. Painted onto their banner — an old sheet — is a slogan you […]

Rix Quinn’s Minute Story: Goldilocks and the bears

What’s the real meaning of the fairy tale about Goldilocks? To be frank (although Frank is not my name), “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” is more confusing than a stop sign on a roller coaster track. First, you gotta accept that a bear family owns a fancy two-story deep in the woods. These beasts wake one morning, choose porridge instead of raw animal parts, then go for a walk while it cools. Obviously, rich bears buy quality products like silver […]

COVID-19 schools local control

Editorial

OP-ED: School districts should have local control in matters relating to COVID-19

The state’s mandates regarding masks and vaccinations are merely the headlines and excuses of the moment in an incremental dismantling of local control in public education – and other arenas -- that began decades ago, with the pace only picking up since. Indeed, the latest top-down decisions from the governor and Illinois State Board of Education – and at times we’ve seen this at the federal level, as well – are just a continuation of the pattern of higher officials […]

September 11 20th anniversary

KNAPP: Happy 20th anniversary. Guess what your gift is?

Twenty years after the 9/11 attacks, the US government is finally — well, probably, kinda sorta — ending its lost war with Afghanistan, drawing down its presence in Iraq, and reducing the heat of its “global war on terror” from a rolling boil to hot-tub temperature. That's good news, right? After two decades of getting groped at airports, searched and surveilled without a warrant or even probable cause, and paying through the nose to finance the murders of hundreds of […]

RIX QUINN’S MINUTE STORY: Modern history?

My friend Jim talks to middle school students about history. He starts off by asking what each of them knows about the past. “There are two types of history: ancient and modern,” one kid told him. “Modern is what happened in the last few years. Ancient was a long time ago…about 1970 or before.” When Jim told the guy he remembered 1970, the boy stared at him like he was a fossil. “Wow,” he marveled, “I can’t believe you’re still […]

COMMENTARY: Some radio lore worth sharing

I will be among the first to admit that radio isn't like it used to be. Additionally, I cannot refute that the Internet radio landscape has changed as audiences have become bored of terrestrial AM/FM radio. I've worked in various forms of media over the years, especially in radio. My first start in radio was at a college LPFM station in Canton, Mo., home of Culver-Stockton College's KCSW-LP. I was originally in college for religion and philosophy, but looking at […]
