Centralia man arrested after early-morning disturbances

CENTRALIA, Ill. — Centralia police arrested a 19-year-old man after a series of large early-morning disturbances Saturday in Centralia and nearby Wamac. Cedric Powe, of the South Brookside area of Centralia, is in custody at the Marion County Jail. He faces allegations of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated assault. The allegations are pending in Marion County circuit court. Extreme Heat Warning in effect for SW Illinois, Metro-East, Eastern Missouri

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Madison County and much of the St. Louis region. The warning takes effect at noon Sunday, August 9, and remains in place until 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 12. Forecasters expect heat index values as high as 109 degrees. SALEM — Deuel Veterinary Services will close at 5 p.m. Aug. 20 after 15 years serving Salem and the surrounding area. Dr. Abby Deuel said she and her family are moving overseas for what she called a “once in a lifetime adventure.” The clinic will continue to schedule appointments and serve clients during normal business hours through August 20. SPRINGFIELD -- Perry County has been given a tentative property assessment equalization factor of 1.0158 for taxes payable in 2026, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue. The equalization factor, also called the multiplier, is used to make property assessments fair and consistent among Illinois counties.
