ELLIS: Can anything fix our two-party system?

While our two-party system of government has never functioned perfectly, in recent years it has become increasingly dysfunctional — not only in Washington but in many state houses. Why? Have both the Republican and Democratic parties been weakened and crippled by extreme ideological factions in their ranks? Has each party lost its core values and identity? For more than a decade, we have watched the increasing ineffectiveness of the two-party system play out with the lack of civility, cooperation and […]

LETTER: Nokomis should join EJ Water

Dear Editor, It is obvious that the Nokomis City Council should have voted to join EJ Water Corporation, a not-for-profit co-operative. We were advised that they could build a sewer plant for approximately $5 million. Our engineer said they could get it done for $7 million if I recall. Now, the City is proposing a $9 million bond issue. The citizens cannot afford this, and I cannot support it. It is not too late to do the smart thing. EJ […]

LETTERS: Ranked choice voting

I have lived and worked in Decatur for more than 30 years. This year’s primary election was the first in a very long time where I did not participate. In the general election, many sections presented only one choice to voters. I left those sections blank. During this frustrating election cycle, I became aware of ranked-choice voting. This alternative voting method is active in Maine and Alaska, dozens of other cities, and just recently got approval in the city of […]

OUR VIEW: Let’s move on from the midterm election

The 2022 election has been considered "the most important election of all time." The end result last week proved once again that it most certainly was not. There was no red wave, and there really wasn't the dominance that Democrats purported to have. We're one week past the election, and the Democrats and Republicans are continuing their incessant bickering. It, unfortunately, will not be any better with the gridlock of a Republican-majority House and a Democrat-majority Senate. The toxicity has […]

KNAPP: Time for the spoiler whining

Chase Oliver earned 2.1% of the vote in Georgia's U.S. Senate race. Supporters of Herschel Walker and Sen. Raphael Warnock call Oliver a spoiler because he forced the election to a December 6 runoff election. Here we go again. Yet another “third party” candidate has “spoiled” “major party” candidates’ victory party plans by “stealing” votes that rightfully belong to … well, someone else. Libertarian Chase Oliver garnered a little more than 2% of the vote in Georgia’s U.S. Senate race. […]

Election Day

EDITORIAL: America loses on Election Day

The looming darkness this weekend has nothing to do with us reverting back to standard time. That's a short-term problem of little importance. The looming darkness rather comes from the upcoming midterm elections on Tuesday. A looming storm that has been plagued with factually incorrect political ads, a cavalcade of clowns as candidates, and mudslinging. As usual. We're told in our elections that there are only two choices to select: Democrat and Republican. In most cases, that's wrong. In 35 […]

Election Day

KNAPP: Things always change with Election Day

"Election Day" has become a fuzzy concept lately. Officially it falls on “the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November.” However, most states offer early voting in person or by mail these days. Millions of Americans have already cast their votes. The probability that we won’t know all the winners and losers on "election night" is in the neighborhood of 100%. The U.S. Senate race in Georgia may well go to a runoff. Some Congressional races […]

QUINN: Really ancient food

Sometimes I wonder how our ancient ancestors survived without food like breakfast cereal and ice cream. But maybe they didn’t realize what they were missing, because pre-historic television commercials got such poor reception. Seriously, consider the paleolithic period, which covers about 2.5 million years. Up until 12,000 years ago, these folks were hunters and gatherers. They just kind of wandered around, searching for fruit, vegetables, and slow animals that looked tasty. Their housing was basic. They lived in huts, teepees, […]

KNAPP: Look for the Libertarian label Nov. 8

In Illinois, the Libertarian Party statewide candidates have no ties to the Republican-aligned Mises Caucus. In other states, you might not be so lucky, so research your ballot well on November 8. During election years, attention tends to turn to “swing state” races that might affect which “major” party ends up with majorities in the US House or US Senate. Earlier this year, Arizona was widely considered one of those “swing states.” Incumbent US Senator Mark Kelly (D) is looking […]
