Earlier, we reported on a salmonella outbreak in relation to salad products manufactured by BrightFarms at their Rochelle, Ill. facility.

A source working with BrightFarms contacted us Saturday evening with more in-depth information relating to the outbreak.

The source reveals that BrightFarms announced a voluntary recall of some of their packaged salad greens produced in Rochelle. The products in question come out of their greenhouse farm and are sold in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana in addition to Illinois.

The voluntary recall was well in the works prior to the June 15 alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At the time of the alert, a press release from BrightFarms was awaiting approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The press release, published Thursday, reveals details regarding where the affected products were sold. The affected BrightFarms products were sold by the following retailers, but not limited to the following:

  • Mariano’s Fresh Markets in Illinois
  • Strack Van Till locations in Illinois and Indiana
  • Select Walmart stores in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa
  • Sullivan’s Foods, Caputo’s, and Jewel-Osco locations in Illinois
  • Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Copps, and Tadych’s locations in Wisconsin

Affected retailers have been instructed to remove all affected products from store shelves.

This recall is only limited to the above products grown at the company’s indoor farm in Rochelle. All other BrightFarms products from other greenhouses are not affected.

The company is taking steps to enhance its already-rigorous food safety protocols, including the testing of all products at the Rochelle facility for exposure prior to distribution.

Customers who bought the affected products should discard them or return them to their point of purchase to receive a full refund. Questions from consumers can be addressed by calling (866) 857-8745 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern or by emailing [email protected] with the subject line “Recall.”
