Champaign Fire responds to explosion

CHAMPAIGN — A residential explosion required the response of the Champaign Fire Department over the weekend, according to a news release Monday.

The department responded to a single-family residence that exploded and caught fire in the 2700 block of Judith Drive on Sunday afternoon. Fire crews would remain on the scene extinguishing small fires that remain in the debris.

The response would follow a report from a neighbor of a single-story home that exploded and was on fire.

Once on the scene, firefighters reported the home had collapsed and was fully involved with fire. Crews extended multiple hose lines and fought the fire from the outside. Firefighters discovered two adjacent homes had suffered damage from the explosion and quickly assessed them. Crews will remain on scene until the scene is secure and there are no additional spot fires.

The cause of this explosion and fire is not determined as investigators remain on scene conducting their investigation. It is believed there was no one in the home at the time of the explosion. There were no firefighter injuries reported.
