Illinois news in brief for Monday, Jan. 13, 2020

'Rape in Champaign’ email is linked to prisoner's early release, Tribune reports As investigators look into a 2012 email to staff of then-Gov. Pat Quinn about a “rape in Champaign,” the Chicago Tribune reported it could deal with an inmate released from prison early by Quinn in 2010 who later sexually assaulted a young girl. The paper reported the state employee who the email said “kept his mouth shut” worked at the facility that admitted the suspect for the sex crime. Soldier […]

COMMENTARY: Political New Year’s resolutions for 2020

I wrote a Letter to the Editor which was sent out to roughly a dozen publications over the weekend, but only one took the time to publish it. I feel it was appropriate to share: As we enter a new year, a new decade and yet another election cycle, the ongoing question from fed-up voters keep ringing in my mind: “Why don’t we have other candidates running for office? These candidates on the ballot are awful!”   It’s an easy […]

Population loss in Illinois more than 51,000 in 2019, most lost in decade

(The Center Square) -- Illinois lost nearly 105,000 people in net domestic migration from 2018 to 2019, according to new numbers from the U.S. Census Monday. In total, the Land of Lincoln lost on net 51,250 people, the largest annual population decline this decade. Its the sixth consecutive year Illinois' population declined. The 51,250 in net population loss is roughly the size of the village of Hoffman Estates in suburban Chicago or Normal in downstate McLean County. The U.S. Census […]

Small business owners prepare for minimum wage hikes in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Small business owners around the state are preparing for two minimum wage hikes in 2020. The minimum wage for most employees in Illinois will increase to $9.25 on Jan. 1 and then will jump to $10 an hour in July. “Our members, especially those in downstate small communities, are very concerned because so many of them are the small cafes and restaurants, the small retailers who provide a lot of entry-level jobs for folks in […]

Illinois’ new parking tax takes effect Jan. 1; critics say it will cost jobs

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- To help generate $45 billion in new revenue for the Rebuild Illinois infrastructure plan, the state will start taxing parking businesses on Jan. 1. The tax will be 6 percent of the parking rate for hourly, daily or weekly parking. The tax rate will be 9 percent on monthly or yearly parking spaces. The new monthly revenue will then be used to pay for general expenses with the infrastructure plan. Because the tax doesn’t qualify […]

COMMENTARY: Elections limited to two-party system is unhealthy

Uncontested elections are even worse Petitioning recently ended for the members of the political duopoly for their upcoming primary election in Illinois taking place on March 17, 2020. Only in two counties was a political party that was neither Democrat nor Republican allowed to slate candidates for their own partisan primary. Libertarians in McLean and Kankakee counties recently filed their petitions for their own party primary. It's bad enough when your choices are often limited to Democrat or Republican, but […]

How is the state of Illinois handling the student loan debt crisis?

Student debt is a nationwide plague, with many of us still attempting to pay off loans that have racked up. The problem of student loans is so bad that it informs much of today’s presidential platforms. That being said, the fact of the matter is that much of these debates are still precisely that—debates. While the government tries to figure out how to lessen student loans (or remove them altogether), many of us still have to pay them off. Where […]

Illinois county continues to shed layers of government

WHEATON (The Center Square) -- The county that served as the test case for local government consolidation in Illinois has continued to shed layers of government to save money for taxpayers. DuPage County, located in the western Chicago suburbs, announced that it had dissolved a seventh unit of government when a judge signed an order dissolving the Highland Hills Sanitary District last month. The district served 529 properties in and near Lombard, but was facing a large tax hike to pay […]

Back-to-school sales tax holiday unlikely in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Illinois is unlikely to join the list of states that offer a “back-to-school” sales tax holiday. Sales tax holidays are periods when specific goods are exempted from state, and sometimes local, sales taxes. Many states schedule the events for August when “back-to-school” shopping largely takes place. Illinois held a one-time sales tax holiday back in 2010, but Rob Karr, president of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, said it didn’t provide the boost some expected. “It […]
