Unemployment filings surge in Illinois

Suburban businesses worry if they will reopen at all Unemployment filings across the country have grown, and in Illinois, many enterprises question if they’ll reopen at all. Last year, 39,000 people reported unemployment, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security. On a single day in March, 34,000 people filed claims, as their main means of survival was unemployment. Many people were still awaiting their government stimulus checks. Business in Illinois, like the rest of the country, has dried up. […]

Pritzker defends new misdemeanor rules for businesses that open early

CHICAGO (The Center Square) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker has announced a new way to go after Illinois businesses that open early in defiance of his emergency order to remain closed. The governor filed an emergency rule which potentially could charge businesses with Class A misdemeanors if they open for business before they are allowed under his five-phase reopening plan. Under state law, the violation is punishable by a fine from $75 to up to $2,500 and would require a court appearance. […]

WITHERSPOON: Is Governor Pritzker obtuse?

There’s a pivotal moment in the award-winning film, The Shawshank Redemption when the main character Andy Dufresne discovers there is evidence that could prove his innocence in the murder of his wife and her lover. Andy naively brings this to the attention of the corrupt, tyrannical warden Samuel Norton, who has relied upon Andy’s accounting acumen to skim and launder money from the prison. The warden declares the evidence he has found is false. He tells Andy he should forget about […]

Thousands of candidates not being allowed ballot access nationwide in 2020

(Libertarian Media Network) -- The first stage of nationwide petitioning for ballot access has been carried out by Democrats and Republicans. However, we see dozens of political parties and independents stuck without access to ballots. The majority of states have issued declarations restricting people to essential activities such as getting gas, groceries, and healthcare treatment. People are told to stay six feet away from others and many states have now banned gatherings of large groups of people. How this affects "new […]

Illinois businesses buckle down amid growing coronavirus concerns

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) — As fears over the spread of the coronavirus grow, Illinois’ retail and service sectors are preparing for already thin profit margins getting thinner. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Wednesday the cancellation of the city's St. Patrick’s Day parades, turning away what Gov. J.B. Pritzker said brought more than a million people to the city. “We don’t take it lightly,” Lightfoot said. “Nonetheless, we concluded that holding a parade at this time posed an unnecessary risk to […]

COMMENTARY: Decatur limiting public comments is the bastardization of transparency. You should be concerned.

(Heartland Newsfeed) -- If you live in Decatur, Ill., you should be concerned. Concerned about your First Amendment rights to redress, petition and criticize your government for the ever-increasing pile of wrongdoings they have done to you. During Monday night's meeting of the Decatur City Council, mayor Julie Moore-Wolfe and three aldermen -- Lisa Gregory, Chuck Kuhle and Pat McDaniel -- voted to limit public comments to only the beginning of the meeting, meaning no public time to address meeting […]

COMMENTARY: Ford, Wilcox want to reform ballot access petitioning threshold law

(Heartland Newsfeed) -- For the past several years, I've been quite vocal on reforms to the Illinois Election Code (see December 12 and December 30 commentaries). I've been taking charge on getting support for House Bill 3535 (co-sponsored by Anne Stava-Murray and Carol Ammons) and House Bill 3828 (co-sponsored by Allen Skillicorn, Jonathan Carroll and David Welter) and went into full attack dog mode in November. These bills call for the elimination of the ballot access petitioning threshold multiplier for […]

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Trucks in Illinois with older license plates will soon need new plates, Secretary of State Jesse White announced Friday that his office will begin phasing out the oldest B-Truck plates beginning this month. It’s similar to the program White’s office started in 2017 with passenger vehicles. B-Truck plates that were made from 2002 through 2007 will be replaced this year. In 2021, B-Truck plates that were manufactured from 2008 through 2009 will be replaced and the […]
