Illinois lawmaker files bill to end automatic pay raises for legislators

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- A state lawmaker has filed a bill to end automatic pay hikes for state legislators. Every year, lawmakers must vote to freeze their own pay, or it goes up according to the statute. In 2019, lawmakers left that language out of the budget and got raises of about $1,600 a year. State Rep. Mike Murphy’s bill would remove the automatic cost-of-living adjustments and require lawmakers to vote for legislative pay hikes. “We’re one of the better […]

Prosecutors seeking 5-year prison sentence for former Rep. Chris Collins

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Former Rep. Chris Collins should be sentenced to nearly five years in prison for insider trading, Federal prosecutors told a U.S. district court judge in filings Monday. Collins, 69, opted to continue serving in Congress while lying about his case to Federal investigators, prosecutors said in a letter to a Federal judge for the Southern District of New York. Collins, who was the first Congressman to endorse President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, in October, pleaded guilty to […]

Pritzker fires Ag director Sullivan, had knowledge of 2012 ‘rape in Champaign’ email

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Gov. J.B. Pritzker fired Illinois Department of Agriculture Director John Sullivan for failing to take action regarding a lobbyist's 2012 email that mentioned a rape in Champaign and ghost payroll practices. The governor's office said that Sullivan, as a state senator in 2012, knew about the email, but did nothing about it. Sullivan said he never read the entire email while running for election and dealing with health issues. The allegations were at the end of the email. […]

EDITORIAL: Twitter, Spotify choose to be losers in 2020 election ad race while Facebook, Google cash in

Presidential candidates running for the role of commander-in-chief have spent more than $105 million on digital ads to date. Facebook and Google have received a lion's share of the ad revenue. Twitter chose to opt-out for the 2020 presidential election, and just recently, Spotify decided to opt-out as well. This is despite political organizations like the campaign of Bernie Sanders and the Republican National Committee who previously utilized the platform's paid ad network. With billionaires in the presidential race, such […]

COMMENTARY: Elections limited to two-party system is unhealthy

Uncontested elections are even worse Petitioning recently ended for the members of the political duopoly for their upcoming primary election in Illinois taking place on March 17, 2020. Only in two counties was a political party that was neither Democrat nor Republican allowed to slate candidates for their own partisan primary. Libertarians in McLean and Kankakee counties recently filed their petitions for their own party primary. It's bad enough when your choices are often limited to Democrat or Republican, but […]

Skillicorn, GOP colleagues call for special legislative session to tackle ethics reform

SPRINGFIELD (Heartland Newsfeed) -- Several members of the Republican caucus are calling for a special session in order to bring ethics reform to the General Assembly, but it doesn't seem likely it will happen this month. Skillicorn and four other colleagues -- Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City), Chris Miller (R-Oakland) […]
