HILL: Woods handles issues with level head and determination

I am writing this letter to say that I am a proud supporter of Scott Woods for sheriff. I have the pleasure of knowing Scott as both a friend and co-worker.  Scott has wonderful values in life.  His faith and family are above the most important.  I have worked alongside Scott in many situations and found him to be able to handle any situation that is given him with a level head and determination to get the situation resolved. Scott […]

TOSETTI: Get our acts together, start managing the present

Are you concerned? I am. This has nothing to do with politics, as I am a true independent and have been for a long time, knowing that there are good people on both sides. Lately there seems to be a lot of discussion on the State of Illinois and more particularly, rural America, the small towns in it, the counties and the townships, and the struggles most of them are facing. Having been in business 40-plus years with offices in […]

KEEL: Crony capitalism plays in Peoria

The Peoria City Council has approved an extra 1 percent sales tax, but not for schools, roads, or fire/police protection. This “enhanced” tax rate was set up to benefit the developer who is bringing Portillo’s, the popular Chicago-area hot dog franchise, to Peoria. Developer William Torchia convinced our City Council that such assistance was the only way to bring the iconic restaurant to Peoria. Torchia hopes to recoup $650,000 in costs associated with land acquisition and property development. The Libertarian […]

SINCLAIR: If it’s billionaire vs. billionaire, I’m sitting election out

If next year’s election comes down to Bruce Rauner versus J.B. Pritzker, I’m not voting.  I have not missed voting in 35 years, but I will not cast a vote for either man. Why? I blame everybody. I blame the newspapers for reporting on the candidates’ wealth and declaring it news. How about giving equal coverage to the candidates running who don’t have silver spoons in their mouths? I blame Springfield for allowing our campaigns to be financed with ridiculous […]

Emery: Packers, Bears prepare for 193rd meeting Thursday, lifetime series tied

The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears renew the NFL’s oldest and longest rivalry when they meet for the 193rd time on Thursday night (7:25, CBS). Incredibly, it’s the rubber match. The series, which began in 1921, is a dead-level tie at 93-93-6 in regular-season play. A mere 16 points separates the teams over the life of the rivalry, as Green Bay holds a slight 3,300-3,284 edge in scoring. Recent history favors the Packers, as Aaron Rodgers is 13-3 against […]

Manar/Bourne: Bipartisanship in General Assembly led to historic landmark school funding reform

Educating children should be a bipartisan issue. Two weeks ago in the General Assembly, it finally was. After years of working on this issue and months of intense negotiations, the General Assembly passed a landmark school funding reform law that fundamentally will transform the way Illinois funds its schools. This once-in-a-generation school funding legislation is the single most important bipartisan reform Illinois has seen in decades. As downstate legislators of different political parties, we were proud to work together on […]

Letter To The Editor: Montgomery County Board faces potential cuts for Fiscal Year 2018

The tentative Montgomery County budget for fiscal year 2018 came in with a deficit of approximately $600,000 in the General Fund. The General Fund supports many of the offices and services citizens use everyday. The General Fund projected revenues for 2018 are $5.8 million, the same as 2010. While the County's revenues have been steadily declining or flat lined these past 8 years, the expenses have continued to increase. For many years the County has used money from the sale […]

With Sessions’ sentencing change, it’s time to end secrecy around private prisons

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently announced new guidelines (justice.gov) that will result in a significant increase in the prison population, directing federal prosecutors to seek the toughest penalties possible for nonviolent defendants. Those prisoners will have to be incarcerated somewhere, which is perhaps the reason for the Attorney General’s February memo reversing an Obama-era directive to phase out the Justice Department’s use of private prisons. While the private prison population will likely increase, taxpayers can expect little in terms of […]
