NOKOMIS — The Nokomis Chamber of Commerce met at noon on Thursday, September 7 inside the council chambers at the city complex.

Secretary Roger Blankenship made an announcement that he is resigning and retiring from the Chamber after 43 years. His resignation and retirement were approved by members in attendance. A Secretary would need to be appointed to serve the remainder of the term ending in March 2024.

Minutes from the May meeting were approved without objection, as was the treasurer’s report from Treasurer Ed Chausse. The report showed an available balance of $2,445.58. Chausse would also report that the certificates of deposit were rolled over to those with higher earning rates. There is $39,229.17 in the mine fund CD and $2,713.37 in the Bicentennial Fund. One of the biggest expenditures since the May meeting was a $5,000 donation to the Nokomis Public Library.

After three years of being organized privately, the Chamber and the St. Louis Parish have taken the reins of the fall citywide rummage sales. The fall citywide sales will be Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14.

A brief report on the Nokomis Homecoming indicated that it was a very good event.

President Scott Doerr mentioned the possibility of going in on the fruit sale event alongside the Nokomis FFA. Doerr will check with Ron’s Produce in Taylorville on the prices before reporting back.

Details were provided about the “Snowkomis Celebration” for December 8-9. Several events include a tree lighting, ice skating, live nativity, a 5K run, a parade, and other activities.

Following the conclusion of the regular meeting, a special meeting of the board would appoint Michele Orsborn as secretary until the end of the term.

Present at the meeting were Doerr, Chausse, Blankenship, and directors Judy Beaman and Jo Ann Keele. Also present were Jake Leonard from Heartland Media Group of Central Illinois, Lisa Casterline from the Nokomis Public Library, and Orsborn from First National Bank of Nokomis. Nokomis mayor Dylan Goldsmith was also in attendance. Vice President Judy Rupert was absent due to conflicting events.

The next Chamber meeting will be Thursday, November 9 at noon in Demi’s Diner.
