Illinois county continues to shed layers of government

WHEATON (The Center Square) -- The county that served as the test case for local government consolidation in Illinois has continued to shed layers of government to save money for taxpayers. DuPage County, located in the western Chicago suburbs, announced that it had dissolved a seventh unit of government when a judge signed an order dissolving the Highland Hills Sanitary District last month. The district served 529 properties in and near Lombard, but was facing a large tax hike to pay […]

OP-ED: Illinois population decline should be a wake-up call

Illinoisans have been hearing their state is shrinking for five years now. But new figures released Thursday say something they’ve never heard. From Walla Walla to Waco, there are 383 metropolitan statistical areas, or MSAs, across the country. Illinois is home base for 10 of them. From July 2017 to July 2018, all 10 shrank. That’s never happened before. And many other figures from the new release are disturbing. No other state in the lower 48 saw all of its […]

SPRINGFIELD/WASHINGTON (Illinois News Network) -- U.S. Census data released Thursday showed the population in every one of Illinois' metropolitan areas declined in the past year for the first time. The Chicago metropolitan area, which includes suburban cities and portions of Wisconsin and Indiana, reported the largest population decrease in the nation, shrinking by an estimated 22,068 people. That represents 0.23 percent of the area’s total population of about 9.5 million people. Population in the Danville area shrank by 1.26 percent, […]

ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina defended his city by calling Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant a "stupid player and loser" after Bryant called St. Louis "boring." Bryant made the comments on Friday during a forum discussion at the Cubs' annual fan convention. "Who would want to play in St. Louis?" Bryant said "So boring. It's so boring. I always get asked like, 'Where do you like to play? Where do you not like to play?' St. Louis […]

$2 billion Illinois rail project falls behind high-speed targets

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Amtrak riders are still waiting for higher train speeds along the Chicago-to-St. Louis route. Officials promised travel at up to 110 mph along the line as part of a nearly $2-billion dollar project largely funded by Federal economic stimulus dollars awarded under then-President Barack Obama. Recent projections had trains reaching 90 mph on a portion of the trip in 2018, but the timetable now has been pushed into this year. Installing and testing new federally-mandated […]

Taxpayers foot bill for village officials’ spouses to attend conference

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- A review of tax dollars that officials from local governments around Springfield used to attend the annual Illinois Municipal League conference in Chicago showed the smallest community spent the most, and some officials took their spouse. The private Illinois Municipal League lobbies state government on behalf of municipal governments. Not only do taxpayers pay their village’s or city’s membership to the IML, many of them across the state also foot the bill for local officials […]

OP-ED: Holiday shopping and the sales tax Scrooge

The average American will spend around $800 on gifts this Christmas. But making those holiday buys in Illinois will leave many families wishing they could get more bang for their buck. Illinois passed its first state sales tax – 2 percent on all retail goods – all the way back in 1933. It not only replaced revenue that came from the old statewide property tax, but brought in a lot of new money as well. Fast forward to today: Illinois’ […]
