NOKOMIS -- Nokomis Public Library is launching a new community book club and inviting readers to connect over stories and conversation. The club will hold its first meeting on Thursday, March 26, from 7:30–8:30 p.m. at the library. NOKOMIS -- Severe thunderstorms and straight-line winds made for a rough evening earlier this week. The storms struck the panhandle and eastern regions of Montgomery County on Sunday, leaving considerable damage in their wake. On the receiving end of the biggest impact from the storm was Nokomis Junior/Senior High School. Wind damage from the tornado resulted in several pieces of sheet metal roofing flying around. NOKOMIS -- The Nokomis City Council heard a downtown revitalization plan for a commercial building during its most recent meeting on Monday, March 9. It was among two other major items for discussion in the meeting. HILLSBORO -- The University of Illinois Extension office in Montgomery County will be offering the state-mandated Certified Food Protection Managers class and exam. The Illinois Department of Public Health Food Sanitation Code requires food service establishments to be under the operational supervision of a certified food protection manager. HILLSBORO -- A machinery-related accident late last week at the Deer Run Mine in Hillsboro resulted in a fatality. Montgomery County Coroner Randy Leetham would issue a confirmation Monday as a work-related fatality.
