Brain imaging shows memory loss differs by age

IRVINE, Calif. (UPI) -- High-resolution brain imaging can be used to show memory proficiency between older and younger adults, according to University of California researchers. Using magnetic resonance imaging, researchers at the University of California, Irvine, found patterns in memory loss during two tests of memory, an object memory task and a location one. "This suggests that not all memory changes equally with aging," lead author Zachariah Reagh, who participated in the study as a graduate student at UCI and is […]

The Healthy Geezer: Why exercise and fitness are important as a senior

How important is exercise when you are a senior? Is it worth the risks of hurting yourself? All the current scientific evidence shows that geezers should exercise, even though many older people think it could harm them. Study after study demonstrates that seniors hurt their health a lot more by being sedentary. If you’re inactive, you deteriorate. Physical activity can help restore your capacity. Most older adults, regardless of age or condition, will benefit from increasing physical activity to a […]

The Healthy Geezer: What should I do about my difficulty with staying balanced?

I'm 79 and I've taken a couple of spills in the last few months. I'm concerned that I might not be as steady on my feet as I used to be. What should I do about this? About one in ten people over 65 experience difficulty with balance. More than 40 percent of Americans will go to a doctor complaining of dizziness. Getting older is only part of the problem. The Healthy Geezer: I’m not able to sleep as well as I used to when I was younger

I have found that I don't sleep as well as I used to when I was younger. How common is this? Many people believe that poor sleep is a normal part of aging, but it is not.  Sleep patterns change as we age, but disturbed sleep and waking up tired every day are not part of normal aging. Seniors need about the same amount of sleep as younger adults—seven to nine hours a night. Unfortunately, many older adults don’t get […]

The Healthy Geezer: Baby-sitting grandparent seems to get more colds

Since I started being a baby-sitting grandparent, I seem to be getting more colds. I must be catching germs from the kids, right? The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases reports that schoolchildren get as many as 12 colds a year. Put those kids near their grandparents and it doesn’t take a scientist to know that those colds are going to spread. My personal physician--also a grandfather--says that one of the problems is that these walking petri dishes come […]

Experts: Democratic candidates for governor float unworkable, expensive healthcare ideas

CHICAGO (Illinois News Network) -- Several Democratic candidates for Illinois governor are floating ideas they say will improve Illinois’ healthcare outcomes, but critics of the various plans say the ideas are unworkable and expensive. Billionaire J.B. Pritzker said in a campaign video he wants a new program called IllinoisCares. “We should be focused on expanding affordable healthcare, not eliminating it,” Pritzker said, criticizing the Trump administration and congressional Republicans’ attempts at dismantling the Affordable Care Act. “That’s why I have […]

Flu season has arrived in force in some Illinois communities

LITCHFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Illinois is not escaping the flu outbreak that has swept across parts of the country. The Illinois Department of Public Health does not track flu cases, just the number of people who are hospitalized. So it's up to local public health departments to paint the picture of Illinois' early flu season, and the picture isn't pretty. Litchfield schools, in Montgomery County, canceled classes last week because so many students and teachers were out sick. Montgomery County Public […]
