JACKSONVILLE — Morgan County shoppers now have another retailer to choose from.
Marshalls, a subsidiary of TJ Maxx’s parent company, The TJX Companies, opened to the public Thursday at the former ShopKo store, located at 1964 W. Morton Road. ShopKo was at that location until it permanently closed in 2019.
The former store was divided into two different spaces to accommodate Marshalls and another incoming business.
A spokesperson for The TJX Companies stated that the Marshalls store will be nearly 18,000 square feet.
There are currently over 1,200 Marshalls stores across 48 U.S. states, as well as in Puerto Rico.
TJX looks to expand its footprint in both the U.S. and abroad. As part of plans established in May 2024, the company aims to open 1,300 new locations worldwide over the next few years.
130 new stores will open stateside over the next year, the majority of which will be TJ Maxx or Marshalls locations.
TJX also plans to open new stores under its other brands as well, with 20 new Sierra stores and nine HomeSense stores slated to open within the next year.
Jacksonville Mayor Andy Ezard expressed optimism and excitement about Marshalls joining the community.
“Our community has been patiently waiting and is eager for Marshalls to open,” Ezard stated in a comment to Heartland Newsfeed earlier this week. “As many know, Marshalls is quite sought after, and the excitement is spreading like Illinois humidity.”
The store is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The remaining space is intended for the new Hobby Lobby store. It is expected to open sometime in 2026, according to a report from the Jacksonville Journal-Courier.
