MATTOON — Mattoon and shoppers residing in Coles County will experience another new tenant inside The Shops at Emerald Acres this weekend.

Sierra, a brand property of The TJX Companies dedicated to selling outdoor attire, is opening at the shopping center on Saturday, according to a press release obtained by Heartland Newsfeed.

The store will be roughly 18,000 square feet in size.

The opening comes two days after the opening of a new Marshalls store in Jacksonville, which opened Thursday inside a similarly sized facility inside the former ShopKo store.

Sierra was founded in Reno, Nev. back in 1986, and it became part of the TJX family after being acquired in 2012, joining other brands like TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Marshalls in the U.S. The company also owns the HomeSense and Winners brands that operate primarily in Canada and TK Maxx in the United Kingdom.

The store’s opening marks the second store in Mattoon, alongside the Marshalls store currently operating at the Cross County Mall.

Mattoon opening of Sierra part of ongoing expansion strategy

TJX looks to expand its footprint in both the U.S. and abroad. As part of plans established in May 2024, the company aims to open 1,300 new locations worldwide over the next few years.

130 new stores will open stateside over the next year, the majority of which will be TJ Maxx or Marshalls locations.

The opening of the Sierra store in Mattoon marks one of 20 new stores under the brand slated to open within the next year. Nine HomeSense store are also slated to open within the same timeframe.

“We’re thrilled to bring our off-price shopping experience to Mattoon,” said Amanda Johnson, Assistant Vice President of Marketing for Sierra, who noted that this marks the tenth store for the brand in Illinois.

The store will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.
