Moultrie County Clerk resigns

SULLIVAN — Moultrie County’s county clerk has resigned, according to confirmation from the office Friday.

Georgia England’s term was set to conclude in November. In addition, the Democratic official was not seeking reelection in the November general election.

England submitted her resignation during the county board meeting Thursday, effective immediately.

Chief deputy clerk Pam Wittkowski will assume the daily functions of the office. This will be in place until an interim clerk is appointed or elected by the county board, according to Moultrie County State’s Attorney Tracy Weaver.

Weaver states that there is no definitive date for when an interim clerk can assume control of the office via appointment. However, by state law, the Moultrie County Board has 60 days from the date of resignation to fill the vacancy.

The appointment will need to be in an open session at an upcoming county board meeting, Weaver adds. The appointee will serve until the expiration of the term at the beginning of December.

The resignation follows a razor-thin Republican primary between Lisa Ozier and Linda Qualls on June 28. Qualls came out on top over Ozier, 1,393 to 1,389, according to unofficial election results.

England was not available for comment as of Friday evening.
