Only one contested race in Douglas County primary
TUSCOLA — There will only be one contested race in Douglas County’s primary on June 28. Incumbent James Mikeworth will be taking on Ed Carlton in the District 6 primary. Both candidates are Republicans.
The primary would have been over last month, but would change due to redistricting and U.S. Census complications. A vote by the Illinois General Assembly would move the primary to June 28. This only applies to the 2022 primary, then it reverts back to March in 2024.
The last day for voter registration for a mail-in ballot is May 13. Early in-person voting will begin on May 19. Voter registration is available online through June 12. Additionally, those seeking a mail-in ballot should send and postmark it by June 23.
Douglas County Board and countywide races uncontested
Five county board districts are running uncontested with only Republicans in the running. They are Richard Hein (District 1), Bibby Appleby (District 2), Tom Hettinger (District 3), Phil Morris (District 4), and Gary Luth (District 7). However, there are no candidates running in District 5.
Republicans are also seeking re-election for countywide positions as well. They are Judi Pollack for county clerk, Bobbi Rairden for treasurer, and Nathan Chaplin for sheriff.
No Democrats on primary ballot except precinct committeepersons
There are currently no Democrats on the ballot for countywide or county board positions in the primary. Democrats will be able to slate for office during the post-primary nomination in vacancy period.
Also on the ballot are Democratic and Republican precinct committeepersons, as well as a $30.6 million bond referendum for the ALAH school district to pay for heating, ventilation, and cooling upgrades.
