Sadly, I’ve unfortunately been slacking off at the sports desk due to other duties, but here’s the latest summary of events that occurred this past weekend in the sports world:

Millikin volleyball sweeps Wisconsin-Stevens Point, leading to weekend winning streak

STEVENS POINT, Wisc. — The Millikin University volleyball team played their latest match on Friday in Stevens Point against the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, knowing their long-standing losing streak against UWSP.

The Big Blue, prior to Friday’s march, hasn’t won in volleyball matches against UWSP since 1999. Fortunately, that losing streak came to an end, as Millikin secured victory for the first time via a clean sweep in a quarter century 26-24, 25-14, 25-19 over UWSP.

The Big Blue outkilled the Pointers 43-32 and won the narrow digs battle 53-50.

Kailee Itzenhuiser topped the kills column with 11, while Addison Oyer added nine and Delaney Higgins chipped in eight. In a match that saw the Big Blue tabulate 12 service aces, Kaitlyn Skowronski and Alyssa Frederking notched five apiece. After achieving her 1,000th career assist against Carroll on Wednesday night, Frederking added 19 more to her career totals against the Pointers, and Gracie Shaffer added 17.

Defensively, Itzenhuiser tallied the top number of digs with 15, and Skowronski added 12. Kyra Carothers notched three blocks.

For the Pointers, Ashley Kopp recorded 11 kills.

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Big Blue women’s volleyball team took the court in Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday for day two of the UD River City Classic. The eleventh-ranked Millikin extended their win streak to ten with wins over the host Spartans of UDubuque and Lakeland University.

Against UDubuque (18-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22), the Big Blue outkilled the Spartans 62-51. They won the digs battle 97-92.

Kailee Itzenhuiser led the Big Blue in kills with 18, and Delaney Higgins added 16. Gracie Shaffer tallied 27 assists, while Alyssa Frederking added 19. Sophia Howell led the way in digs with 23, Shaffer added 20.

Dubuque was led by Delainey Winkel with 16 kills.

In the sweeping victory over Lakeland (25-14, 25-9, 25-16), the Big Blue hit for a .310 efficiency with 40 kills compared to the Muskies’ 19. The Big Blue tallied 63 digs in the contest.

Higgins was the kills leader in the second matchup of the day with 13, and Elle Richards added nine. Kaitlyn Skowronski followed up a six-ace game against Stevens Point with another six-ace game against the Muskies. Shaffer added another 23 assists. Itzenhuiser tallied the top number of digs with 18, and Howell added 16.

Susana Stevens led the way for the Muskies with 10 kills.

Culver-Stockton has a rough weekend

CANTON, Mo. — The Culver-Stockton College football team dropped a 45-13 decision to third-ranked Grand View University in the Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division opener at Ellison Poulton Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats played turnover-free football for the second time this season but the inability to make a stop defensively on fourth down did the C-SC in as the Vikings built a 31-0 halftime lead in part by converting three fourth-down plays leading to 17 first half points.

Offensively, C-SC struggled in the first half, registering just two first downs and never crossing over midfield in the first 30 minutes of game action.

Grand View added another touchdown in the third quarter to make it 38-0 before the Wildcats found some offensive success.

C-SC drove 57 yards on five plays before quarterback Drake Day connected with Durand Abston over the middle on fourth and goal from the 18 yard line. Bradyn Ritchie added the extra point.

The Wildcats notched their final touchdown on the final play of the game when Kyle Dixon hauled in a one-yard pass from Day as time expired in the game. The drive covered 65 yards in 10 plays. Jayden Neal rushed for 31 of his team-high 32 yards on the drive.

Day finished the day 17 of 28 for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Dixon led the receivers with 10 receptions for 81 yards.

Meanwhile, in Iowa…

OSKALOOSA, Iowa — The Culver-Stockton women’s volleyball team had four players register double digits in kills in a four-set Heart of America Athletic Conference victory at William Penn University Saturday afternoon in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The Wildcats, who finish their three-match road trip through Iowa with a 2-1 record, rebounded from a loss at Grand View Friday night with a 25-23, 25-17, 14-25, 25-18 victory over the Statesmen.

Zoe Irvin led the C-SC quartet with 13 kills from her outside spot while Ashleigh Brawley recorded 12 terminations in the middle. Victoria Pollard and Abby Godwin were also in double figures with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

After hitting just four percent in the loss to Grand View, the Wildcats attacked at 23 percent in the victory Saturday. Brawley was especially effective with just one error on 27 attempts for a .407 hitting percentage.

Brawley was also a factor on defense with six block assists. C-SC recorded seven team blocks in the match after not registering a block in the loss to Grand View.

The Wildcats also put four players in double figures in digs with Kyla Ellis guiding the Wildcats with 21. Pollard and Godwin garnered 14 and 13 digs, respectively, while Lauren Bloom had 12 digs. Ellis was also had decent service game with a team high four service aces.

C-SC, now 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the Heart, returns home this Friday, Oct. 4, against Peru State College at Charles Field House. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.

And finally, elsewhere in Missouri…

MARSHALL, Mo. — Missouri Valley scored three unanswered goals to keep Culver-Stockton College winless with a 3-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory Saturday night in Marshall, Mo.

The Wildcats’ Ruben Reinertsen collected his seventh goal of the season in the 30th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead over the 10th-ranked Vikings. Martin Quijada assisted on the goal.

That goal seemed to wake Missouri Valley up and the Vikings tied the game seven minutes later and then took the lead for good just before half time in the 44th minute.

C-SC was outshot 9-3 in the first half and 17-5 overall by the Vikings. Missouri Valley also held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Wildcats return home this Wednesday, Oct. 2, to battle Clarke University at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Culver-Stockton women’s soccer team was limited to three total shots in a 5-0 loss to 22nd-ranked Missouri Valley College Saturday night in Marshall, Mo.

The Wildcats registered all three shots in the first half and were outshot in the game 19-3 overall. The Vikings netted two goals in the first half and three more in the second half to drop C-SC to 6-3-1 overall and 1-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

After playing their last three games on the road, the Wildcats are slated to return to Ellison Poulton Stadium this Wednesday, Oct. 2, to battle Clarke University. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Lindenwood football edges Eastern Illinois in conference action

CHARLESTON — A tale of two halves on Saturday afternoon as Eastern Illinois led 17-0 at the half before suffering a 28-25 loss to Lindenwood as a potential game tying field goal missed with just seconds remaining in regulation.

EIU drops to 1-4 overall, 0-1 in the Big South OVC.  Lindenwood improved to 2-3, 1-0 in the Big South OVC.

It was all EIU in the opening half as EIU drove the length of the field to start the game finishing with a Pierce Holley to Cooper Willman 13 yard touchdown connection.

The Panthers followed with scores on their next two possessions with Holley scoring on a 1-yard run and Drew Schiller hitting a 32-yard field goal.

EIU’s defense came up with a big play to end the first half as they held Lindenwood on a fourth-and-goal at the one. Kaelin Drakeford and Tre’jon Lewis came up with the goal line stop.  Drakeford led EIU with 11 tackles.

The Panther defense came up big again on the opening drive of the second half with Moses Alexander picking off a Nate Glantz pass.

Glantz made an adjustment from there connecting four times for touchdowns in the second half with receiver Jeff Caldwell.   Glanz was 14-of-19 for 283 yards and the four scores.  Caldwell had four catches, all for touchdowns, finishing with 115 yards.  His touchdown grabs came on plays of 11, 22, 8 and 74 yards.

EIU rebounded late in the fourth as Holley found Eli Mirza for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Holley and Mirza connected on the two point conversion and EIU trailed 28-25 with 3:36 remaining.  Holley passed for 326 yards. Mirza caught seven passes for 69 yards.  Willman (5 receptions, 71 yards) and Terrance Gipson (9 receptions, 93 yards) were the other top targets.

The Panther defense would force a three-and-out on the next drive giving EIU the ball back with just under two minutes remaining. EIU drove into field goal range but missed a 30-yard attempt ending the chances of forcing overtime.

MJ Flowers posted his second 100-yard rushing game this season finishing with 123 yards.  Anthony Shockey joined Drakeford with double figure tackles finishing with ten.

Vincent King led Lindenwood with ten tackles. Cortezz Jones rushed for 104 yards.

Redhawks win three in a row behind Pippin’s career-high four field goals

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – DC Pippin kicked a career-high four field goals to lead #13 Southeast Missouri (4-1) to a 19-0 shutout over Northwestern State (0-5) Saturday on a misty day at Houck Field.

Pippin scored the final 12 points of the game on kicks of 30, 38, 37 and 24 yards to send SEMO to its third-straight win in its non-conference finale.

The Redhawks wrapped up the non-league portion of their schedule with a 3-1 mark giving Tom Matukewicz his best non-conference record as SEMO’s head coach.

Defensively, SEMO held NSU to just 120 total yards and completed its first shutout at home in 10 years. The Redhawks last blanked Missouri Baptist, 77-0, in Matukewicz’s first career game as a head coach on Aug. 28, 2014.

The shutout was also the Redhawks first on their home field over an NCAA Division I opponent in 30 years. SEMO beat UT Martin, 10-0, on Sept. 24, 1994.

Khalani Riddick’s 43-yard punt return set up SEMO nicely at the NSU 37-yard line before the Redhawks took a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Paxton DeLaurent to Cam Pedro with 9:03 left to play in the first quarter.

The Redhawks added to their lead during their next possession when DC Pippin split the uprights with a 30-yard field goal. Pippin’s kick pushed SEMO’s lead to 10-0 with 5:54 to go.

Pippin again connected, this time from 38 yards out, to widen SEMO’s lead as the Redhawks headed into the intermission ahead, 13-0.

SEMO’s defense held NSU to just 50 total yards in the first two quarters of the game.

The Redhawks tacked on three more points in each of the third and fourth quarters courtesy of Pippin to polish off their second home victory of the season.

DeLaurent completed 21-of-43 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown, his 13th passing TD of the season. Darrell Smith ran for a career-high 127 yards on 31 carries, averaging 4.1 yards per attempt.

Seven different receivers caught a pass for the Redhawks, as well. Pedro led the way with four receptions for 58 yards.

Jared Pedraza and Bryce Norman paced SEMO’s defense with six tackles apiece. Pedraza faced his former NSU team for the first time.

Additionally, the Redhawks stopped the Demons twice on fourth down and limited NSU to 63 passing yards for the day.

SEMO improved to 5-2 all-time against Southland Conference opponents. All five of those wins came under Matukewicz. The Redhawks won on Family Weekend for the fifth time in six years and are now 8-2 in such games since Matukewicz took over as head coach.

The Redhawks head to Eastern Illinois for a Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Association matchup on Oct. 5.

#19 Illinois drops game to #9 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — There was no upset this weekend as No. 19 Illinois fell to No. 9 Penn State, 21-7, in a ranked road contest at Beaver Stadium on Saturday night.

The Fighting Illini opened the scoring, but 21 unanswered points from the Nittany Lions proved to be the difference in the matchup between the two ranked Big Ten programs.

Kaden Feagin recorded a team-high 13 carries and amassed 76 total yards of offense, including a 34-yard carry for the Illini’s longest rushing play of the season thus far. Josh McCray finished with two catches for 38 yards and had a 30-yard catch-and-run to convert on a third-and-21 in the second quarter. Zakhari Franklin tallied team-best marks with four receptions for 49 yards.

Carson Goda registered his first touchdown since joining the Orange and Blue, securing a 4-yard score on the Illini’s first possession of the night.

Luke Altmyer went 16-for-25 for 185 yards and one touchdown.

Matthew Bailey led the Illinois defense with nine tackles, while Gabe Jacas was credited with his team-leading third sack of the season.

No. 19 Illinois (4-1, 1-1 B1G) will take its first off week of the season next week before returning to Memorial Stadium to host Purdue on Oct. 12.
