Illinois Sports Hall of Fame coming in 2028

SPRINGFIELD — A letter of intent was signed last week at Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe to build the Illinois Sports Hall of Fame. The facility will be built on roughly four to six acres of the facility grounds. There is a target for a grand opening in the summer of 2028.

The project is a joint venture of Indiana entrepreneur Tim Turpin and Legacy Pointe ownership. However, Turpin said that the actual blueprints have yet to be drawn. Currently, construction hinges on whether he can raise the estimated $7.5 million needed to complete the project.

Optimism about venture’s future

Despite these early-stage challenges, Turpin expressed optimism about the venture’s future.

“We’re going to have the outside of the building done up in the colors and logos of every big pro and college team, and maybe some high school teams, from the state of Illinois,” Turpin said. “Cubs fans, Bears fans, Bulls fans, Illini fans – every team imaginable fans – will see their team driving by on Interstate 72 and say, ‘Hey, we gotta stop in there.'”

The facility would house artifacts and displays honoring professional, college, and high school teams throughout Illinois. Steve Luker, a managing partner of Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe, expressed enthusiasm for the project.

“We’re very happy to have the Illinois Sports Hall of Fame be on our grounds and to be moving forward with this,” Luker said.

Viability of the Illinois Sports Hall of Fame

The location offers significant advantages for the Hall of Fame’s viability. Turpin cited figures showing approximately 2 million people annually visit the neighboring Scheels store. An estimation of another 2 million is to visit the sports complex itself.

“That gives us a built-in audience,” Turpin explained.

The Illinois Sports Hall of Fame has operated online for two years under Turpin’s leadership. An annual dinner honoring inductees took place in Springfield last year. This year’s event would happen on July 25 at the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield Hotel downtown.

This year’s class of inductees includes former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jason Isringhausen. Other inductees include Harlem Globetrotters legend Mannie Jackson and basketball coach Cuonzo Martin, among others.

The project represents a significant economic development opportunity for Springfield’s tourism and entertainment sector, potentially drawing sports enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.

More details are to come as the project moves forward with fundraising efforts and architectural planning.
