RAYMOND — Panhandle School District announced it has started the new school year with bus stop arm extensions, which have been installed on its route school buses.
The enhancement is part of the district’s commitment to safety within the school district. The new external warning systems will increase the visibility of buses while picking up or dropping off students within the community and across the rural landscape of the district, helping to increase safety for all road users.
“Safety is the first priority for the Panhandle School District as we serve our students and families. I’m pleased that we worked with BusGates to bring this new technology to our school buses,” said Aaron Hopper, Panhandle School District Superintendent. “This upgrade will help increase safety for our kids as they get on and off the bus by making it clear to drivers that they need to stop. It’s a small change but it can make a big difference in keeping our community safe.”
The LED-illuminated arms that attach to the bottom of existing retractable bus stop signs and extend over 5 feet from the side of the bus are created by Illinois based BusGates.
“BusGates is excited to collaborate with the Panhandle School District and prioritize safety through our advanced stop arm technology. By enhancing school bus visibility and significantly reducing the risk of vehicle ‘drive-arounds,’ we are committed to supporting a safer environment for students,” said BusGates Partner Trevor Clatfelter.
With external warning systems remaining largely unchanged over the last 30 years, motorists continue to pass stopped school buses in alarming numbers year over year.
The latest survey from the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) reports an estimated 62,500 vehicles passed stopped school buses illegally during a single measurement day in the 2022-2023 school year in the U.S.
