TORONTO — MLS team Toronto FC will have a new designated player through 2026, according to the club’s press release Friday.

Italian winger Federico Bernardeschi joins the team after five seasons with Serie A club Juventus. Federico recorded 12 goals and 24 assists across all competitions. During his tenure at Juventus, he helped guide the team to three Serie A, two Coppa Italia, and two Suppercoppa Italiana championships.

“We believe he’s exactly what we need right now, both on the field and in the locker room,” team president Bill Manning said in the release. “Federico has proven himself to be a champion and a leader at Juventus and for the Italian national team. [He] brings a pedigree to Toronto that’s second to none.”

Federico, 28, has 38 caps, netting six goals for the Italian national team. He would notch the game-winning penalty kick to seal a shootout victory for Italy over England in last year’s UEFA European Championship final.

Federico joins star forward Lorenzo Insigne, a fellow Italian, who signed a blockbuster deal with Toronto earlier this year.
