House Democrats call for Pelosi to step down as minority leader

Ray Downs United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Many Democrats are calling for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to step down from her leadership role after a bruising -- and expensive -- House race loss in Georgia's 6th District. The Democratic Party boosted 30-year-old political newcomer Jon Ossoff with a campaign war chest of more than $40 million and a team of Democratic strategists to take on Republican Karen Handel in the suburban Atlanta district. Some Democrats believed that Ossoff […]

‘Unmarked’ government vehicles targeted by transparency group

Local governments throughout Illinois own a total of more than 270,000 cars, according to the Edgar County Watchdogs (ECW), who also say they are working on a system to allow anyone to quickly identify municipal vehicles. The ECW argued that vehicle ownership should be more transparent to all. "We are working on an application that will be searchable by license plate number, public body, and zip code so citizens and taxpayers can identify those vehicles in order to question the […]

Romanian prime minister removed in no-confidence vote

Ed Adamczyk United Press International BUCHAREST, Romania (UPI) -- Romania's Parliament ousted the country's prime minister Wednesday in a no-confidence vote, six months after he assumed office. Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu's left-wing Social Democrat Party accused him of failing to undertake economic reforms, and Parliament voted him out in a censure motion. The vote was 241-10. The action is a first in Romanian politics, and came after a feud between Grindeanu and party chief Liviu Dragnea that angered some members of […]

Ray Downs United Press International ROSWELL, Ga. (UPI) -- Republican Karen Handel defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff in the most expensive congressional election in U.S. history to replace former Georgia Rep. Tom Price, who joined the Trump administration. Together, the campaigns spent more than $55 million, with Ossoff outspending Handel by roughly $25 million. But despite his vast support from the Democratic Party and online popularity, including celebrity endorsements from people like actress Alyssa Milano, Ossoff did not beat Handel in Georgia's […]

Elections board will be ‘toast’ without new computers by 2018 elections, official says

Ken Menzel, general counsel for the board, said there are approximately 4,000 active campaign committees for 2018 and without at least $25,000 to replace obsolete equipment, the voting lines will be exceedingly long next […]
