GUEST EDITORIAL: Pensions keep Illinois in fiscal turmoil

Goodbye to Illinois’ $130 billion pension hole. Now it’s $133 billion. And getting deeper. Sometimes the clearest warning about Illinois’ fiscal crisis can be communicated using numbers, sometimes with a well-chosen phrase. Here we present both, as reminders during the period before a new Democratic governor takes office with a Democratic mega-majority, that the state’s messes will only worsen. Until lawmakers take decisive action. First, the awful numbers: For several years we’ve cited the figure of $130 billion to represent Illinois’ […]

Donald Trump lays wreath at Arlington National Cemetery

ARLINGTON, Va. (UPI) -- President Donald Trump made an unscheduled appearance at Arlington National Cemetery Saturday to observe wreaths laid to honor fallen military veterans. For about 15 minutes, Trump walked around grave sites as volunteers placed holiday wreaths on headstones except for ones bearing the Star of David. The tradition reportedly began in 1992. "They're doing a great job," Trump said in reference to the volunteers, according to a pool report. The president was accompanied by two military men in camouflage […]

OP-ED: Two wrongs don’t make a right in ‘Fight for $15’ debate

The "Fight for $15" an hour is back in Illinois, although it's not likely to be much of a fight and this time there's a bit of a twist. Democratic Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker is telling anyone who will listen that he wants to gradually raise the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour starting in the first six months of his term that begins in January. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed the last legislative attempt to gradually raise the state's […]

Bill to clear some past marijuana convictions gets new support

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- A ranking member of the Illinois Senate has picked up a bill that would allow people to clear low-level marijuana convictions from their record with permission from a judge. Lawmakers decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana in 2016. When the law changed, possession of up to 10 grams of marijuana in Illinois became a civil matter rather than a criminal one. The 2016 change didn't address those who had already been convicted of the crime. […]

Appeals court rules against Donald Trump’s asylum ban

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- A Federal appeals court denied President Donald Trump's request to strike down a lower judge's order to block the administration's asylum ban for migrants who enter the country illegally. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals late Friday said Trump's new rules limiting who can seek asylum go against U.S. law, and are attempt at an "end-run around Congress." "Just as we may not, as we are often reminded, 'legislate from the bench,' neither may the Executive legislate […]

Trump would ‘absolutely consider’ delay on government shutdown

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The White House and congressional negotiators are considering a bill that would delay a government shutdown after the death of former President George H.W. Bush. President Donald Trump said Saturday that if approached by members of Congress he would likely grant a request to push the deadline back, while funeral plans for Bush, whose body is set to lie in state at the Capitol, are being completed. "If they come -- which they have -- to talk […]

COMMENTARY: Threats of violence have no place in politics

(Heartland Newsfeed) -- The lame duck session of the Illinois General Assembly got incredibly ugly Wednesday during discussion regarding overriding a bill veto. A bill which would increase the cap on tort lawsuit payouts from its current $100,000 to a cap of $2 million was placed under an amendatory veto by outgoing Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. During debate in the veto override, in which legitimate financial concerns were made by Rep. Peter Breen (R-Lombard) were later mocked by Rep. Stephanie […]

Judge extends recount deadline for Florida provisional, mail-in ballots

LAUDERHILL, Fla. (UPI) -- Thousands of provisional and mail-in ballots in Florida that were initially set aside now have more time to join the recount, a judge ruled early Thursday. Voters who cast the provisional or mail-in ballots, but were rejected because of mismatched signatures, now have until Saturday to verify their ballot, Judge Mark Walker of the U.S. District Court in Tallahassee ruled. "This should give sufficient time, within the state's and counties' current administrative constraints, for Florida's voters […]
