‘New Illinois’ movement grows amid skepticism

Organizers pushing for a new, independent state within Illinois said they are prepared to play the long game to conquer the urban-rural divide. The movement of counties wanting to break off into a new territory is growing. G. H. Merritt, chairman of the board of the nonprofit New Illinois, said it is fundamentally about representation in government, not partisan politics. Merritt pointed out rural communities often feel forgotten and it is a phenomenon transcending party affiliation. "The government is passing things […]

Illinois ranks high in child welfare, poor outcomes rise

(Illinois News Connection/Public News Service) -- Illinois is doing better than most states in supporting youth well-being, according to a new report, but local leaders said declines in education and health outcomes still demand attention. The 2026 Kids Count Data Book from the Annie E. Casey Foundation looked at how children and families are faring across four areas. Illinois’ strongest rankings are in education and health but academic outcomes remain worse than pre-pandemic levels. Loukisha Pennix, chief youth and family potential officer for YWCA […]

Rural Illinois hit hardest by childcare crisis

(Public News Service/Illinois News Connection) -- A new analysis shows that nearly half of young children in the U.S. live in childcare deserts. That number is even higher in Illinois, where the majority of counties lack adequate licensed providers for children under age five. In 2023, licensed providers could serve only about 31 percent of Illinois children in that same age range. The Center for American Progress says the problem is particularly dire in smaller communities, creating a stark urban-rural […]

Billing shift won’t solve maternity care deserts in Illinois

(Illinois News Connection/Public News Service) A health-care expert in Illinois questions whether changes to the way doctors report and bill for pregnancy-related services will expand access to maternal care. The American Medical Association is shifting from a global payment system to itemized billing for prenatal and delivery services. Charles James, president of North American Health Care Management Services, said the update is needed to modernize standards. He said he hoped it would improve access to pregnancy services for families, but added it misses […]

Illinois rural news options remain limited

(Illinois News Connection/Public News Service) -- The days of thumbing through a community newspaper are retreating into history. A Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism 2024 report showed fewer than 5,600 newspapers are still in business and 80% are weekly publications. The data also found the Illinois counties of Hamilton, Wayne, Franklin, Jefferson, Perry, and Saline have only one newspaper each. Four others have none. Fewer publications mean more news deserts, which are communities without regular access to information. Zachery Metzger, director […]

Illinois advocates, lawmakers call for ending juvenile court virtual hearings

A 2020 report from the Brennan Center notes that "several studies of remote witness testimony by children found that the children were perceived as less accurate, believable, consistent, and confident when appearing over video." SPRINGFIELD (Public News Service) -- At the beginning of the pandemic, Illinois transitioned most of its court operations online. Now, two years later, advocates and lawmakers are calling for an end to virtual hearings in juvenile court. State Rep. Will Guzzardi (D-Chicago) is the lead sponsor on a […]

Advocate: Fair redistricting in Illinois could curb power brokering

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who backed a nonpartisan redistricting process on the campaign trail, last June signed into law new House and Senate maps drafted by lawmakers. CHICAGO (Public News Service) -- Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is facing 22 charges of bribery and racketeering. The Chicago Democrat led the chamber for decades, and one ethical-government advocate said his control of the redistricting process was one way he maintained power in the General Assembly. Illinois allocates $220 million for transit, ports projects

The state of Illinois is allocating nearly a quarter-billion dollars to support new downstate transit and ports projects. Roughly half will go toward 37 transit systems outside of Chicago, and the other half will invest in a dozen of the state's ports. Gov. JB Pritzker said in a news conference Wednesday the investment will benefit organized labor across the state. The money is the latest round of funding from the $45 billion dollar Rebuild Illinois program. Including the newest round of investments, Illinois has devoted […]
