Madigan doesn’t have enough votes for another term as Speaker, Democrats say

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- More Illinois House Democrats have said they won’t support Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan for another term. Every two years, the Illinois House votes for speaker; 60 votes are needed. The office manages how the House operates. Madigan (D-Chicago) has held that spot for all but two years since 1983. He recently has been implicated in several federal indictments against other people but hasn’t himself been charged with a crime. He maintains his innocence. State Rep. […]

Pritzker says winter COVID-19 deaths could dwarf spring numbers

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker gave an ominous prognostication Wednesday regarding COVID-19 deaths in Illinois. With an additional 140 deaths being reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health, 11,014 people have now died from COVID-19 and related illnesses. During his daily briefing, Pritzker said deaths from the virus could dwarf the death totals from the initial spring outbreak. “Models project that without additional mitigations, daily COVID-19 deaths would at least match the previous spring wave and could even rise […]

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Gov. J.B. Pritzker has criticized local governments for not enforcing his COVID-19 orders, placing blame for increased cases at their feet. Local governments are looking for more collaboration from the governor. In Springfield and Sangamon County, officials are issuing fines and suspending food licenses. In a neighboring county, Jacksonville mayor Andy Ezard said they don’t have the capacity to enforce. “With our numbers with our police department, there are four or five officers on duty each […]

Lawmaker calls for proportional allocation of Illinois’ electoral votes

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) – If Illinois lawmakers were ever given the chance to approve a change, they could join Maine and Nebraska in dividing up electoral college votes proportionally instead of it being a winner-takes-all state. Illinois has 20 electoral votes for the electoral college. That’s the national system used to elect the president of the United States. Illinois state Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield) has for years filed a bill to allow for proportional allocation of those votes based on […]

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) – For the next five months, Illinois business owners and their employees are required to tell customers to wear a mask or they could face fines of up to $2,500. Despite Republicans who wanted to suspend the rule because they said it could still criminalize business owners, Gov. J.B. COMMENTARY: Republican legislators implicated as part of Madigan special interest donations

As if the whole corruption saga surrounding Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan wasn't already interesting. However, it just got that much more interesting, based on recent developments that now implicate members of the Republican Party. Madigan, presumably "Public Official A" in recent ComEd legal filings, and some of his special interests may have something to do with contributions to some Republicans as well. Davidsmeyer willingly admits to receiving ComEd money State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) recently stated on local station […]
