HP recalls computer batteries due to fire and burn hazards

PALO ALTO, Calif. (UPI) -- Hewlett-Packard has recalled 50,000 lithium-ion batteries for notebook computers and mobile workstations, according to a news release. The batteries can overheat and pose fire and burn hazards, according to a statement released Thursday by the United States Consumer Product and Safety Commission. The computer company received eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500. Walmart drops in-house punishment for shoplifters

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (UPI) -- Retailer Walmart is ending an alternative to prosecution for shoplifting, the company said, that could put a larger burden on local police forces. The company is suspending its relationship with two companies offering anti-shoplifting educational programs. SEOUL, South Korea (UPI) -- North Korea's only 3G network provider will pull out of the hermit kingdom, cutting off some 3.5 million citizens subscribed to its local Koryolink services.
