Fall seed harvest off to good start

New products coming to market

(FarmWeekNow) -- Widespread drought and other weather challenges shouldn’t have a big impact on the production of corn and soybean seed for next year. In fact, seed industry representatives are quite bullish about new product offerings for 2024. “The (seed) crop is just now starting to get harvested, and all signs are thumbs up on what we have for the crop,” Eric Boeck, head of Syngenta Seeds, told FarmWeek at the Farm Progress Show (FPS). “Whether we have more soybeans […]

Plant-based meat alternatives struggle to make the cut

(FarmWeekNow) -- Offerings of plant-based meat alternatives expanded in recent years, but they haven’t captured consumers’ interest nearly as much as some economists expected. According to a new report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange, the market for plant-based meats likely reached a tipping point as the initial period of exceptional sales growth appears over. “Whatever their reason for purchase, plant-based offerings appear to have fallen short of consumers’ expectations in terms of either cost or performance,” said Billy Roberts, senior food […]

Farm Progress Show returns to Decatur Aug. 29-31

DECATUR (FarmWeekNow) -- Advance tickets are selling quickly for this year’s Farm Progress Show, planned for Aug. 29-31 in Decatur. And for good reason. This year’s event, which is the first in four years to be held in the Prairie State without any restrictions, will feature nearly 550 exhibitors, the largest varied industries tent in the show’s history and daily field demonstrations and ride-and-drive opportunities. “It’s shaping up to be a tremendous Farm Progress Show (FPS),” Matt Jungmann, FPS manager, […]

Heat wave could slow drought improvement

BLOOMINGTON (FarmWeekNow) -- Soil moisture levels and crop conditions improved significantly the past six weeks. But that pattern could shift as hot and dry conditions are projected to envelope much of the Corn Belt, including Illinois, for at least the next week. High temperatures could fire up well into the 90s with heat index readings into the triple-digits, based on the forecast as of press time. If realized, the hot and dry weather will slow drought improvement, according to Trent […]

Dust storms rare, not unheard of in Illinois

The large dust storm that struck central Illinois on May 1 was a rare event for its widespread nature and destructive results. But such storms are not unheard of in the Prairie State, which is comprised of about 57,913 square miles, according to nationsonline.org. “Dust storms are more common in the Plains and southwest U.S.,” the National Weather Service (NWS) Lincoln office noted in a special report. “They do not happen often in Illinois, but are most common around early May […]
