Extreme heat expected through Tuesday

The Bi-State region will be experiencing humid conditions and scorching extreme heat this weekend through early next week.

The majority of the region is under a Heat Advisory starting at noon local time on Saturday and currently set to expire Tuesday evening at 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Lincoln, St. Louis, and Paducah, heat indices could get as high as 106.

The exception lies in Jersey, Madison, Monroe, and St. Clair counties in Illinois and Jefferson, St. Charles, St. Louis City, and St. Louis County in Missouri, which will be under an Extreme Heat Warning during the same period.

Heat indices in the immediate Greater St. Louis metropolitan area could get as high as 108.

The combination of hot temperatures and high relative humidity may cause heat illnesses.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.

The Illinois Department of Human Services has information on cooling centers and energy assistance related to the extreme heat. That information is available by calling the IDHS toll-free hotline at (800) 843-6154.

Locally, in Nokomis, the Nokomis City Complex is a cooling center, and Nokomis Public Library is a cooling center during regular business hours Monday through Saturday.

Residents residing within the Saint Louis Metropolitan Area can get information about cooling centers or energy assistance related to the excessive heat by calling the United Way of Greater Saint Louis at (800) 427-4626, or by dialing 2-1-1. You

Residents outside the St. Louis Metropolitan Area residing in Northeastern, East-Central, and Southeastern Missouri can get information by dialing 2-1-1.
