MACON — Teachers within the Meridian School District have been working without a contract for the past several months.
Social media posts published recently have called into question the status of ongoing negotiations between teachers and the district.
“As we navigate contract discussions with the (Meridian CUSD #15) Board, we remain committed to working collaboratively to reach an agreement that is satisfactory for both parties,” said Meridian Federation of Teachers president Brian Prekovitch in a statement to respond to those social media posts. “We urge the Board to genuinely listen to the concerns presented during negotiations and to reflect on the values that our district stands for.”
Prekovitch also relayed the message that the district’s emphasis on recruiting, hiring, and retaining highly qualified employees mirrors their same mission in hopes that both parties can work together to realize those goals.
“While our contract has expired, we are confident that, through open dialogue and mutual respect, we can find common ground,” Prekovitch adds. “Our ultimate aim is to ensure our students receive the high-quality education they deserve.”
No developments came forth during the Board’s most recent meeting on September 16 regarding the negotiations. However, the Board did approve a raise in the daily rate for substitute teachers to $135.
The Board’s next meeting will be October 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Meridian District Office.
