NOKOMIS (Heartland Newsfeed) — A steering committee called Nokomis Community Gardens will be meeting at Ugly Mugs Coffeehouse on Tuesday, October 24 at 7 p.m.
The interim chair of the committee, former chef Harrison “Skip” Graden, is seeking to establish solutions to the eyesores of empty lots around the City of Nokomis as part of a mission to beautify the city, but also give back to the community at the same time.
The meeting will discuss the various eyesore properties within the community and discuss options to make those properties nicer than what they were previously. The garden, or gardens, will enable the production of fresh vegetables to those who participate in the project, for disabled and elderly residents who unable to tend their own gardens and for distribution for those seeking help from the Nokomis Christian Missions, Nokomis Food Pantry and the American Red Cross.
Community gardens have been popping up across the country and throughout the world and it is the committee’s mission to make the community visually appealing and provide a service to those in need, as well as those who assist with the project.
Graden offered several ways to get involved:
Jake Leonard, a broadcast media and journalism veteran, is the editor-in-chief of Heartland Newsfeed. Leonard is also GM and program director of Heartland Newsfeed Radio Network, wrestling editor and contributing writer for Ambush Sports, a contributing writer for My Sports Vote and Midwest Sports Network, and a former contributor to Bleacher Report and Overtime Heroics.
