NEW YORK — Gamers who have been demanding for the return of a popular game mode in the WWE game franchise may be getting their wishes fulfilled.
General Manager mode, or GM mode, will be returning with the release of WWE 2K22. Michael Straw from Sports Gamers Online broke the news relating to the game Thursday.
Sources close to the game development spoke on the matter.
“It was a top priority,” one source said. “The fans clearly wanted it, and the team knew that they add the ammo to get it approved and in.”
The mode was discontinued following the release of SmackDown vs. Raw 2008. It was replaced by the open-ended sandbox mode known as Universe Mode.
Universe Mode gave players the ability to fantasy book an entire company. This is in stark contrast to GM Mode, which allowed you to run one show – Smackdown, Raw, or ECW.
Although fantasy booking included revamps to shows, rosters, and logos, you would think you could do almost everything you wanted to do. The key word being almost.
However, consumers were not impressed with Universe Mode. Among the biggest complaints were the lack of purpose and a lack of progression tracking.
Meanwhile, GM Mode did have a purpose with objectives to achieve. The endgame was to perform better than your rival programming within WWE.
GM mode wasn’t always perfect, as it had its own share of limitations. Moreover, there were options to manage contracts, injuries, and stealing superstars from other shows. However, the greater appeal enjoyed by many was that of the ratings-specific challenges.
The mode within WWE 2K22 has been tested by multiple people with feedback received consistently. According to one person, it’s aiming to be deeper than anything fans could’ve expected from a return like this.
“It’s going to become the most played mode in the game, I can say that with certainty,” a game tester stated.
Another source went even further, “The mode will sell this game.”
There is not much information available regarding what the mode entails fully. However, official details regarding the full reveal of features will be available in January.
The developer plans to have the game in stores in March 2022.
