Nokomis council reports net-positive month

NOKOMIS — The latest financial report from the City of Nokomis revealed a net-positive month. The city was nearly $4,557 in the positive since the previous report in June.

The financial data was presented by Commissioner Charlie O’Malley during the Nokomis City Council’s regular meeting on Monday, July 27.

Monthly revenues, bills

The report revealed monthly revenues of $146,540 since the previous report. They include:

• Non-Home Rule: $19,300.26
• Business District: $12,679.91
• 1% Sales Tax: $23,035.07
• Grocery Tax: $1,375.39
• Cannabis Use Tax: $1,774.87
• Income Tax: $42,140.42
• Video Gaming Tax: $6,574.47
• State Use Tax: $1,774.87
• Telecom Tax: $1,197.32
• Other revenues: $38,153.80

The council would approve bills amounting to $141,983.35.

The net-positive amount would put an additional $4,556.65 into city coffers.

Proposal to revitalize, revive Gold Star Park

Tom Spears of the Newkomis Beautification Committee spoke on a proposal to revitalize and revive Gold Star Park.

Little information is available about the park site along Illinois Route 16. The following information comes from what is confirmable from available research.

Gold Star Park was launched in 1933. The park sits on a plot of land that is bordered by Illinois Route 16 to the north, West State Street to the south, and South Walnut Street to the west. The park dedication was in memory of those who died in military conflicts. In attendance were individuals who fought in the Civil War.

The park would receive a re-dedication in 1988 following a service project by an Eagle Scout.

At some point between its launch and re-dedication, the park would fall into abandonment. It is not currently in use. However, the marker that designates the park is still there. The owner of the lot is the City of Nokomis, according to Montgomery County GIS reports.

Spears proposed a maximum of $1,000 from the city to complete the project.

Due to Mayor Dylan Goldsmith moving the discussion to public comments, no action could be taken at the meeting.
