HILLSBORO — Montgomery County Clerk Sandy Leitheiser recently announced that due to Illinois Law change, all filings for school board member candidates will take place at the County Clerk’s Office for the upcoming April 1, 2025 Consolidated Election.
Candidates for the following school districts will file in the Montgomery County Clerk’s Office: Hillsboro Unit School District #3, Litchfield Unit School District #12, Nokomis Unit School District #22, and Panhandle Unit School District #2.
Candidates for all other local districts (townships, municipalities, libraries, parks, community college trustees, and educational service region trustees) must file with their respective local clerks, who are the local election officials for Consolidated Elections. Per Illinois law, County Clerks can NOT accept candidate filings for districts other than school districts.
Leitheiser stated the circulation period for school board candidates begins on August 20, 2024 and candidate nomination petitions and other filing forms are available now at the Montgomery County Clerk’s Office.
Candidates are reminded that under Illinois law, no petition circulation should begin before the first day. These petitions must be filed between November 12 to November 18, 2024, and all petition filings must be filed at the County Clerk’s Office in order to be certified for the April 1, 2025 ballot, and must not be filed at the school district unit office.
Any potential candidate should contact the County Clerk’s Office to determine the areas in the school district from which candidates may be elected.
The County Clerk’s Office is located on the first floor of the Historic Courthouse in Hillsboro, and office hours are 8 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday. Email inquiries may be sent to [email protected] or by phone to (217) 532-9530.
