COLUMBIA, S.C. (UPI) -- Exit polls showed Joe Biden winning the South Carolina Democratic primary Saturday. Initial delegate estimates place the former vice president in second place, with Vermont senator Bernie Sanders -- who has swept the first three races -- holding onto his frontrunner status. According to exit polls, Biden won more than 50 percent of the vote in the state, giving him at least 14 of the 54 delegates at stake. By CNN's estimate, as of Saturday that […]

Pennsylvania lawmakers debate participating in regional transportation, climate program

HARRISBURG (The Center Square) -- Pennsylvania’s preliminary participation in a regional program that calls for greater strides toward a clean energy economy and a reduction in carbon emissions in the transportation sector went under the microscope as lawmakers weighed in on the effort. Two state Senate panels – Environmental Resources and Energy Committee and the Transportation Committee – held a joint meeting this week and took testimony on issues linked to the Transportation and Climate Initiative. Patrick McDonnell, secretary of the Department of Environmental […]

Illinois lawmaker files bill to end automatic pay raises for legislators

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- A state lawmaker has filed a bill to end automatic pay hikes for state legislators. Every year, lawmakers must vote to freeze their own pay, or it goes up according to the statute. In 2019, lawmakers left that language out of the budget and got raises of about $1,600 a year. State Rep. Mike Murphy’s bill would remove the automatic cost-of-living adjustments and require lawmakers to vote for legislative pay hikes. “We’re one of the better […]

LONDON (UPI) -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday refused an appeal from Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon to stage a second referendum on declaring independence from Britain. In a letter explaining the decision, Johnson stressed the importance of unity among British nations. "The Scottish people voted decisively to keep our United Kingdom together, a result which both the Scottish and U.K. governments committed to respect," he wrote. "Let's make 2020 a year of growth and opportunity for the whole […]

EDITORIAL: Twitter, Spotify choose to be losers in 2020 election ad race while Facebook, Google cash in

Presidential candidates running for the role of commander-in-chief have spent more than $105 million on digital ads to date. Facebook and Google have received a lion's share of the ad revenue. Twitter chose to opt-out for the 2020 presidential election, and just recently, Spotify decided to opt-out as well. This is despite political organizations like the campaign of Bernie Sanders and the Republican National Committee who previously utilized the platform's paid ad network. With billionaires in the presidential race, such […]

Skillicorn, GOP colleagues call for special legislative session to tackle ethics reform

SPRINGFIELD (Heartland Newsfeed) -- Several members of the Republican caucus are calling for a special session in order to bring ethics reform to the General Assembly, but it doesn't seem likely it will happen this month. State Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-Crystal Lake) recently called for a special session on Twitter, citing that "ending the culture of corruption" is key and "is not rocket science." Skillicorn and four other colleagues -- Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City), Chris Miller (R-Oakland) […]

Nobody, formerly known as Rich Paul, de-platformed from Twitter over hyperbolic Clinton remark

KEENE, N.H. (Heartland Newsfeed) -- A Republican candidate for governor in New Hampshire was permanently de-platformed from Twitter Sunday following an obvious hyperbolic tweet made on the platform. Candidate Nobody (formerly known as Rich Paul) responded to remarks that Karen Lytle (@karenlytle711) made in response to a tweet made by Michigan Congressman Justin Amash. It’s like Pavlov’s dogs. The moment Hillary speaks, a lot of men lose their minds. It actually crosses political ideology. #misogyny — Karma's Quid Pro Quo […]
