Federal judge rejects citizenship question on 2020 census

NEW YORK (UPI) -- A Federal judge ordered Tuesday that the Trump administration remove a question about U.S. citizenship on the 2020 census. U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross exceeded his authority under Federal law by adding the question to next year's census. "Secretary Ross's decision to add a citizenship question in the 2020 census -- even if it did not violate the Constitution itself -- was unlawful for a multitude of independent reasons and must be […]

Illinois congressional delegation to shrink after 2020 Census

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Continued population loss means Illinois will have to say goodbye to one at least one of its 18 congressional representatives after the 2020 Census. Election Data Services recently released its annual projections of which states will gain and lose U.S. Representatives at the next turn of the decade. The projections show Illinois’ 18th Representative will almost certainly be removed and given to another state, said Kimball Brace. Other states projected to lose seats include Alabama, California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, […]

COMMENTARY: Nexstar, let Mark Tippetts debate – no excuses

(Heartland Newsfeed) -- Nearly a week ago, the national Libertarian Party issued a press release regarding Nexstar Media Group's exclusion of Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Mark Tippetts from the first gubernatorial debate slated for September 28 in Austin. As a part of the guidelines, debate inclusion requires being in the top three in polling. Tippetts met that mark in last month's poll conducted by the University of Texas and the Texas Tribune, meeting the requirement leaving 16 percent undecided. However, Nexstar-owned […]

Redskins’ Cousins will file grievance if franchise tagged

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Quarterback Kirk Cousins will file a grievance against the Washington Redskins if the team officially places a franchise tag on him, the Washington Post reported Sunday. Beginning Tuesday, teams have through March 6 to designate the players they want to franchise or transition tag. The Redskins have tagged Cousins the past two seasons. Although the Redskins recently traded for quarterback Alex Smith, they could place a franchise tag on Cousins to prevent him from becoming a free agent and then trade him to […]

Illinois teachers saw union dues flow to Chicago groups, politics and Madigan

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois Policy Institute) -- Government worker unions can use their members' dues in any number of ways. The most recent federal filings of one of Illinois' largest teachers unions reveal millions of dollars directed disproportionately to Chicago and to political causes with which their members may disagree. Illinois teachers may be surprised where their union dues go. Each year, unions such as the Illinois Federation of Teachers, or IFT, are required to file federal reporting documents that outline the […]

Trading oil no longer intrigues T. Boone Pickens

DALLAS (UPI) -- After a "roller coaster ride" that saw $100-per-barrel swings in crude oil prices, tycoon and former oil man T. Boone Pickens said he's bored with trading oil. The 89-year-old investor, who nine years ago launched The Pickens Plan, designed to drive the U.S. energy sector away from its dependence on foreign oil, said in a statement he was shutting down his oil- and gas-commodity focused BP Capital. Launched after he left Mesa Petroleum in the 1990s, Pickens said he's seen oil move […]

Store closures rocked retail in 2017, with 2018 bound to be no different

NEW YORK (Heartland Newsfeed/CNBC) -- A larger-than-average slew of retail bankruptcies and stores being shuttered rocked the industry this year, making headlines and dragging even some of the better-performing companies such as Home Depot, TJ Maxx and Costco down with the dismal news. So far in 2017, 6,985 store closure announcements have been made, according to a tracker from FGRT (formerly Fung Global Retail & Technology).
