Trump signs executive orders on unemployment, payroll tax, evictions

BEDMINSTER, N.J. (UPI) -- President Donald Trump signed several executive orders Saturday, including an order to provide an extra $400 in weekly unemployment aid to those whose $600 weekly benefits expired in July as well as eviction protections and student loan relief. A fourth executive order would defer payroll tax payments for people who earn less than $100,000. It would take effect retroactively and continue through December. During a press conference in Bedminster, N.J., Saturday to announce the orders, the […]

KNAPP: The “election interference” fearmongers think you’re stupid

Xi Jinping and Ali Khamenei prefer Joe Biden to Donald Trump. Vladimir Putin prefers Donald Trump to Joe Biden. That’s according to William Evanina, director of the US National Counterintelligence and Security Center. “Many foreign actors,” he says, “have a preference for who wins the election, which they express through a range of overt and private statements; covert influence efforts are rarer.” I don’t have the words to express how un-surprised I am to learn that foreign governments take an […]

KNAPP: Biden vs. Trump is an echo chamber, not a choice

“Democracy,” H.L. Mencken wrote, “is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.” Mencken’s assessment is philosophically dismissive of democracy as a theory of government. It’s snobbishly contemptuous of Joe Six-Pack’s qualifications for self-government of the democratic type. And it’s as accurate a summary as I’ve come across of how the political establishment — especially “major party” presidential candidates and their campaign minders — view the American electorate. It’s fair to […]

Appeals court rejects Stormy Daniels’ libel suit against Trump

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- A federal appeals court has rejected adult film star Stormy Daniels defamation suit against President Donald Trump. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed Friday the lower court's decision from October 2018 to dismiss the case. U.S. District Judge S. James Otero had ruled that Trump's tweet at the center of the case was "rhetorical hyperbole" protected by the First Amendment instead of the defamation alleged. Daniels, born Stephanie Clifford, alleged that she was threatened […]

Rep. Louie Gohmert tests positive for COVID-19

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Louie Gohmert, the Republican congressman from Texas who has frequently voiced opposition to wearing a mask amid the coronavirus pandemic, has tested positive for COVID-19. In a video message published on Facebook, Gohmert announced that while asymptomatic he has contracted the coronavirus. "The reports of my demise are a great deal premature," he said. "I don't have symptoms that are listed as part of COVID-19, but apparently I have the Wuhan virus," he said, calling the coronavirus […]

KNAPP: Executive orders – this is the brain of Trump on drugs

On July 24, US President Donald Trump signed four executive orders with an eye toward altering the way prescription drugs are priced and purchased in the United States. Three of the four orders embody good ideas that accord with the goals of think tanks supposedly supporting “free-market policy solutions” to America’s healthcare problems. Sally Pipes, president of one such think tank (the Pacific Research Institute), writes in opposition to those three orders, and in support of the fourth, anti-free-market order, […]

Trump pulls out of throwing first pitch at August Yankees game

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- President Donald Trump said Sunday that he will no longer throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the New York Yankees' game against the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 15. Trump wrote on Twitter that he can't make it to New York for the matchup because of his "strong focus" on the coronavirus pandemic and the economy. He promised to "make it later in the season." "Because of my strong focus on the China Virus, including scheduled […]

KNAPP: The road to hell is paved with economic plans

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden says he has an economic plan for America to “Build Back Better.” US president Donald Trump complains that Biden “plagiarized” significant elements of that plan from, you guessed it, Donald Trump. Both plans are packed full of bad ideas that have been proposed a thousand times by a thousand other politicians, so the plagiarism claim seems more trollish than truthy. The problem with both economic plans isn’t that they’re plagiarized, it’s that they ARE economic […]
