More than 300 Chicago government employees receive layoff notices before Thanksgiving

CHICAGO (UPI) -- More than 300 government employees in Chicago learned they would lose their jobs just two days before Thanksgiving, due to budget cuts. Cook County commissioners voted unanimously for a $5.2 billion budget that required 321 public employees be cut, the Chicago Tribune reported. The lay-offs are expected to begin next month. County officials blamed the slimmed-down budget on the repeal of a penny per ounce soft drink tax that was repealed this year. "Laying off more than 300 of […]

HAMILTON: Balancing out the lobbyists

One of the quirks of life in Washington, D.C., is that pretty much the only people who don’t refer to lobbyists by that name are, well, lobbyists. They’re “policy advisors,” or “strategic counsel,” or “public relations advisors,” or lawyers, or even just “consultants.” Whatever they’re called, though, they play a huge role in making policy. For the most part, they are able, well-informed, and skillful at what they do. Their aim is to develop a cordial relationship with policy-makers — […]

MARTIRE: A historical lesson on tax cuts

To stimulate the U.S. economy to “levels you haven’t seen in many years”— President Trump is proposing to cut federal income taxes, for most folks in general, but predominately for really affluent families and mega-corporations. His proposal is so skewed to the wealthy that over the next 10 years, more than half of his multi-trillion dollar tax cut will go to the wealthiest one percent. Big business does well too, gaining an estimated $4.1 trillion tax cut during the next […]

Georgia Libertarians challenge state ballot access law in Federal court

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday, challenges a state requirement that any political party receiving less than 5 percent of the votes in the previous general election must obtain notarized signatures from 5 percent of eligible voters in the district in order to place […]

CBS fires Charlie Rose amid sexual harassment allegations

The accusers -- who were former employees or people who sought jobs from Rose -- told the newspaper he groped them, made lewd phone calls to them and walked around nude in front of them. HOMESTEAD, Fla. (UPI) -- The crew in black and yellow fire suits went methodically about its business, check-listing last details before the beginning of the final Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. A few feet away, the crew in the red and black fire suits was performing the same series of tasks, but a throng of onlookers and well-wishers pressed in at every movement. It was a surreal scene, or rather scenes, both on […]

Why is Springfield’s #MeToo movement against sexual harassment still in the dark? The Ethics Commission, some say

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Anti-sexual harassment advocates, workplace harassment lawyers, even lawmakers themselves say stories of a rampant sexism and harassment culture under the dome in Springfield show that legislators are incapable of policing themselves. A new bill could provide an answer to that problem. The Legislative Ethics Commission is a panel of lawmakers, four Democrat, four Republican, that oversees new Legislative Inspector General Julie Porter, lawmakers' ethics watchdog. Porter was appointed after the office went vacant for years, all […]
