Taxpayers foot bill for village officials’ spouses to attend conference

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- A review of tax dollars that officials from local governments around Springfield used to attend the annual Illinois Municipal League conference in Chicago showed the smallest community spent the most, and some officials took their spouse. The private Illinois Municipal League lobbies state government on behalf of municipal governments. Not only do taxpayers pay their village’s or city’s membership to the IML, many of them across the state also foot the bill for local officials […]

GUEST EDITORIAL: Pensions keep Illinois in fiscal turmoil

Goodbye to Illinois’ $130 billion pension hole. Now it’s $133 billion. And getting deeper. Sometimes the clearest warning about Illinois’ fiscal crisis can be communicated using numbers, sometimes with a well-chosen phrase. Here we present both, as reminders during the period before a new Democratic governor takes office with a Democratic mega-majority, that the state’s messes will only worsen. Until lawmakers take decisive action. First, the awful numbers: For several years we’ve cited the figure of $130 billion to represent Illinois’ […]

Trump would ‘absolutely consider’ delay on government shutdown

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The White House and congressional negotiators are considering a bill that would delay a government shutdown after the death of former President George H.W. Bush. President Donald Trump said Saturday that if approached by members of Congress he would likely grant a request to push the deadline back, while funeral plans for Bush, whose body is set to lie in state at the Capitol, are being completed. "If they come -- which they have -- to talk […]

Midwestern farmers may stand to lose billions in trade war

ANKENY, Iowa (Heartland Newsfeed) -- Midwestern farmers may expect to lose billions of dollars this year should the trade war continue to escalate between the United States and China. The country imposed $50 billion in tariffs on American exports of soybeans and additional agricultural products Friday in retaliation to tariffs imposed in the States on Chinese imports, which was described by President Donald Trump as combating "unfair practices related to the acquisition of American intellectual property and technology." The two […]

COMMENTARY: Bank of Springfield Center and SMEAA — a massive drain on taxpayers

(Heartland Newsfeed) -- The Illinois Policy Institute published a story Tuesday regarding the Springfield Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority (SMEAA) and the damning debt that Springfield taxpayers are on the hook for against their own will. Please note that I may be linking to some of IPI's articles in this commentary. Springfield-area residents often see as many as ten different governmental taxing bodies on their property tax bills each year, most of which include SMEAA. While being furthest from being […]

Chris Sununu (R-New Hampshire) in an op-ed to Sea Coast Media Group. In his op-ed, he accused the Governor of being proud of his 'A' rating from the NRA. "My understanding is that you are proud of your “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, Governor - an organization that routinely opposes common sense gun regulation and whose membership […]

Fiscal bind may lead to police and fire layoffs in Decatur

Reductions in state subsidies are one reason for Decatur’s predicament, but long-running pension woes are an even larger source of pain. Decatur may soon have to shed police and fire personnel – a concern local leaders have linked to a recent reduction in funding from the state. Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe told a state Senate committee May 16 that further reductions in funding from Springfield would lead to layoffs. It’s true that a loss in state funding was one driver […]

McCALEB OP-ED: Collapse of Harvey’s finances signals what’s to come across Illinois

(Illinois News Network) -- The unfolding fiscal crisis in south suburban Harvey should send shivers down the spines of public employees and retirees across Illinois. It also should give pause to taxpayers, who already pay the highest combined local and state taxes in the country and who continually are being forced to pay more because of unsustainable public pension benefits and a culpable state government that refuses to do anything about them. Last fall, Illinois' First District Appellate Court ordered the city of […]
