Don Harmon elected Illinois Senate President, succeeding John Cullerton

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Democrats elected state Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) to be Illinois' new Senate President on Sunday. Harmon said at a news conference after being elected that he will push for a graduated income tax. Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) announced in November he planned to retire. Cullerton resigned Sunday. “I’ve enjoyed working with all of you, Republicans and Democrats alike,” Cullerton said. “We’ve accomplished a great deal together. And now it’s time for me to move […]

Senate introduces impeachment charges, officially begins trial of President Donald Trump

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Two articles of impeachment were introduced in the Senate Thursday, formally marking the start of a historic proceeding that could potentially remove President Donald Trump from office. The seven Democratic managers tasked with presenting the evidence at trial read the articles on the Senate floor. They accuse Trump of abusing his power by trying to press Ukraine to investigate Democratic candidate Joe Biden, and obstructing the House investigation that followed. Although they mark the official opening of […]

Illinois lawmaker files bill to end automatic pay raises for legislators

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- A state lawmaker has filed a bill to end automatic pay hikes for state legislators. Every year, lawmakers must vote to freeze their own pay, or it goes up according to the statute. In 2019, lawmakers left that language out of the budget and got raises of about $1,600 a year. State Rep. Mike Murphy’s bill would remove the automatic cost-of-living adjustments and require lawmakers to vote for legislative pay hikes. “We’re one of the better […]

Skillicorn, GOP colleagues call for special legislative session to tackle ethics reform

SPRINGFIELD (Heartland Newsfeed) -- Several members of the Republican caucus are calling for a special session in order to bring ethics reform to the General Assembly, but it doesn't seem likely it will happen this month. State Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-Crystal Lake) recently called for a special session on Twitter, citing that "ending the culture of corruption" is key and "is not rocket science." Skillicorn and four other colleagues -- Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City), Chris Miller (R-Oakland) […]

House passes stopgap bill to prevent government shutdown

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The House has passed a short-term spending bill to prevent the government from shutting down later this week when it was to run out of funds. The stopgap measure, known as a continuing resolution, passed 231-192 to keep money in government coffers until Dec. 20. It will now head to the Senate for consideration before being signed by President Donald Trump to prevent a shutdown. The current stopgap spending bill is to lapse Thursday at midnight. "I […]

Nobody, formerly known as Rich Paul, de-platformed from Twitter over hyperbolic Clinton remark

KEENE, N.H. (Heartland Newsfeed) -- A Republican candidate for governor in New Hampshire was permanently de-platformed from Twitter Sunday following an obvious hyperbolic tweet made on the platform. Candidate Nobody (formerly known as Rich Paul) responded to remarks that Karen Lytle (@karenlytle711) made in response to a tweet made by Michigan Congressman Justin Amash. It’s like Pavlov’s dogs. The moment Hillary speaks, a lot of men lose their minds. It actually crosses political ideology. #misogyny — Karma's Quid Pro Quo […]

Louisiana, New Orleans Saints nearing long term deal while subsidizing stadium renovations

BATON ROUGE, La. (The Center Square) -- Louisiana officials are close to finalizing a deal with the New Orleans Saints that would keep the team in place for another 30 years, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Monday. “I feel really good that we’re going to work this out,” he said, shortly after visiting a Saints practice. The deal would represent a 15-year commitment, with the structure in place for an additional 15 years, Edwards said. The arrangement would include an estimated […]

Congress makes another attempt at drafting autonomous vehicle legislation

WASHINGTON -- Lawmakers have been slow to react to new developments in autonomous cars, leaving the question of how and when self-driving cars will be adopted across the board largely up in the air. However, it appears that a cross-party contingent is attempting to draw up a new set of rules surrounding autonomous cars in the hope that more progress can be made in the near future. This isn’t the first time that Congress has attempted to set out legislation […]

Minnesota legislature passes major protections for the elderly

Two weeks ago, Minnesota’s state legislature passed one of the most comprehensive bills to address elderly protections in generations. The 168-page law addressed a variety of different issues that had been plaguing Minnesota’s elderly community. Arguably the most significant aspect of elderly care in Minnesota that the Elder Care and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act of 2019 changed was that the licensures for assisted-living facilities. The new bill mandates that all assisted-living facilities that serve the elderly must be licensed by […]
