FAA reports increase in unruly passenger incidents

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Nearly 100 more incidents of unruly passenger behavior aboard U.S. airlines were recorded last week alone, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said. The latest batch of incidents brought the year-to-date total of unruly passenger reports to 3,509, the agency announced in figures updated Tuesday -- 89 more than in the previous week. The vast majority of the reported incidents, 2,605, are classified by the FAA as related to the nationwide mask mandate that remains in place for […]

Understanding the expected rise in skiers in 2021

After increased diversity in the clientele of ski resorts in 2020, the ski industry is hopeful in its projections for 2021. Skiers are expected to join a larger crowd at ski resorts this winter as vaccines are doled out. Open skies, healthy lives The ski industry has seen an increase in the number of skiers due to the activity's adaptability to COVID-19 restrictions. As restrictions over indoor activities became more prominent, outdoor activities that reduced the chances of the virus's transmission were […]

Universal Studios Hollywood reopens after more than a year of closure

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The Universal Studios theme park in Los Angeles reopened to the public on Friday for the first time since it shut down due to COVID-19 more than a year ago. The park, located in Hollywood, reopened with coronavirus precautions in place, including masks, distancing, and temperature checks. "At long last, Universal Studios Hollywood rolls out the red carpet to resume operations and welcome guests back to the theme park," the park said in a statement. "We […]

STEVES: Sicily’s tastiest treats

While food may be an art form in Italy, it's more like a religion in Sicily. Even if you know Italian food well, Sicilian cuisine will surprise you with its complexity — a legacy of successive waves of settlers and invaders who influenced the cuisine. The first time you find yourself choosing between fish couscous and spaghetti Bolognese on the same menu, you know you're at a crossroads of cultures. Thanks to centuries of North African and Middle Eastern influences, […]

Lawnstarter: Best (and worst) states for fall activities

As we enter the fall season, bonfires are roasting, it's time for the harvest and everything is pumpkin spice-flavored. (Blech!) You're likely among those who cannot wait to enjoy the great outdoors in cooler conditions. Hard to dispute, considering a YouGov poll states that fall is most Americans’ favorite season. However, the fall season doesn't strike all states as equally as others. Lawnstarter recently released a list of best (and worst) states for planning fall getaways -- even despite the […]

Roman treasures in Nîmes

Most travelers to southern France's Provence region will visit Arles and Avignon, but ignore nearby Nîmes. While those two towns have name recognition and greater touristic appeal, Nîmes (pronounced "neem") feels richer and more authentic. A visit to this thriving town rewards you with impressive Roman monuments and peaceful, pedestrian-polished streets that feel like a secret between its well-heeled residents. Born a Celtic city around 500 BC, Nîmes joined the Roman Empire in the first century BC. Emperor Augustus made […]

Experiencing Iceland’s raw beauty

Iceland, with cinematic scenery showcasing nature in its rawest form, thrills outdoorsy travelers. Its fascinating landscape, from rugged coasts to steaming volcanoes and craggy glaciers, offers visitors a range of adventures hard to find anywhere else. One of my most unforgettable Icelandic experiences was my first tour into a dormant volcano. The Þríhnúkagígur volcano, a half-hour drive from Iceland's capital city Reykjavík, last erupted about 4,000 years ago. When its magma drained out, a cavity big enough to hold the […]

Pompeii: Italy’s frozen-in-time Roman city

I love exploring the world of ancient Rome, with its grand architecture, fascinating culture, and stories of larger-than-life leaders. But since many of the 2,000-year-old empire's landmarks are reduced to ruins, it can be hard to make sense of the stones and rubble left behind. To get a clearer picture of what everyday life in ancient Rome was really like, visit the well-preserved (and unlucky) city of Pompeii. Located just south of Naples, Pompeii was founded in 600 BC and […]

Visiting Europe’s great libraries

As we've had to postpone our travels because of the pandemic, I believe a weekly dose of travel dreaming can be good medicine. Here's a reminder of the fun that awaits us in Europe at the other end of this crisis. For travelers with an interest in the evolution of Western culture, a stop at one of Europe's grand libraries is an unforgettable experience. Many of them offer the chance to connect with books and documents that changed the course […]
