Bath’s easy urban delights

England's best city within two hours of London is beautiful, historic Bath. The city is popular and expensive, but it's a joy to visit. And rather than deal with London's intensity right off the bat, I like to take the train from the airport to London's Paddington Station and then hop on a connection to this more relaxed and elegant example of urban England. Bath was a joy even in ancient Roman times, when patricians soaked in the city's mineral […]

These hotel fees are making your stay more expensive

Last week I wrote about some of the new and different ways airlines are collecting fees, rendering many base fare comparisons moot. Well, as it turns out, a similar phenomenon has also been affecting a different part of the travel sector for years. I speak, of course, of the hotel industry. Survey: Nearly half of Americans won’t be vacationing this summer

America has been dubbed the 'No-Vacation Nation' after research from Kimble Applications showed that many Americans choose not to use their vacation days. Yet recent data from Bankrate shows the reason behind America's lack of vacations goes a little deeper than simply being vacation-phobic. In a survey of 1,000 people over the age of 18, Bankrate found that of the 49% of Americans who don't intend to vacation this summer up to 50% said they can't afford it. Although vacationing […]

Pothole got your tire? The state may pay for that

SPRINGFIELD (Heartland Newsfeed) -- Temperature swings often result in the creation of potholes that can be mistaken for tunnels, and damage from hitting one of them could cost you hundreds of dollars. However, drivers may be able to get some of that money back from the State of Illinois. The Illinois Department of Transportation handles claims for pothole-related vehicle damage on state highways, but spokeswoman Gianna Urgo warned that not all claims will be eligible for payouts. “The department evaluates each claim […]
