Read this before you buy someone Bitcoin as a gift

This story is part of a new MarketWatch series, “Gifts that pay off.” Between now and Dec. 25, we will look at gifts that could potentially earn the recipients money or improve their lives. DABROWSKI: A near-perfect way to hike property taxes in Illinois

Local officials and union leaders have employed a near-perfect method to pressure residents into accepting higher taxes year after year: Sell the idea that communities around them are more generous than their own. To do that, they consistently point to neighboring communities’ higher salaries, benefits and programs to justify additional spending, then push their own residents into accepting higher taxes to pay for that spending. And if that’s not enough to make the sale, the threat of strikes and binding arbitration only builds additional […]

HAMILTON: Balancing out the lobbyists

One of the quirks of life in Washington, D.C., is that pretty much the only people who don’t refer to lobbyists by that name are, well, lobbyists. They’re “policy advisors,” or “strategic counsel,” or “public relations advisors,” or lawyers, or even just “consultants.” Whatever they’re called, though, they play a huge role in making policy. For the most part, they are able, well-informed, and skillful at what they do. Their aim is to develop a cordial relationship with policy-makers — […]

MARTIRE: A historical lesson on tax cuts

To stimulate the U.S. economy to “levels you haven’t seen in many years”— President Trump is proposing to cut federal income taxes, for most folks in general, but predominately for really affluent families and mega-corporations. His proposal is so skewed to the wealthy that over the next 10 years, more than half of his multi-trillion dollar tax cut will go to the wealthiest one percent. Big business does well too, gaining an estimated $4.1 trillion tax cut during the next […]

KEEL: Crony capitalism plays in Peoria

The Peoria City Council has approved an extra 1 percent sales tax, but not for schools, roads, or fire/police protection. This “enhanced” tax rate was set up to benefit the developer who is bringing Portillo’s, the popular Chicago-area hot dog franchise, to Peoria. Developer William Torchia convinced our City Council that such assistance was the only way to bring the iconic restaurant to Peoria. Torchia hopes to recoup $650,000 in costs associated with land acquisition and property development. The Libertarian […]

Reports: Broadcom making return to US, plans to buy Qualcomm in bid

WASHINGTON (UPI/Reuters) -- Broadcom Ltd. will bring $20 billion in revenue to the United States when it relocates its headquarters from Singapore, President Donald Trump said Thursday when he hosted the CEO of the semiconductor company at the White House. Trump hailed the announcement during remarks he made in the Oval Office on jobs and the Republican tax plan. "They employ over 7,500 American workers in many states across our country," the president said of Broadcom. "And we're looking forward to seeing that number […]

Tesla shares drop after posting wider-than-expected loss

PALO ALTO, Calif. (CNBC) -- Tesla shares fell Wednesday after the company posted a wider-than-expected loss as it spent heavily to ramp up production of its Model 3, its first mass market electric sedan. Complications with Tesla's manufacturing processes have slowed production of the Model 3, a car widely considered key to Tesla's future success. Hopes for the Model 3 have helped propel Tesla's stock so far this year. But in a letter to shareholders, Tesla warned it expects to […]

LOS ANGELES (IGN) -- A House of Cards spinoff is reportedly in early development stages at Netflix. One focuses on political aide-de-camp Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly), with House of Cards season 1-4 executive producer Eric Roth set to write. The publication reports that at least two other concepts are being explored, but no […]

SINCLAIR: If it’s billionaire vs. billionaire, I’m sitting election out

If next year’s election comes down to Bruce Rauner versus J.B. Pritzker, I’m not voting.  I have not missed voting in 35 years, but I will not cast a vote for either man. Why? I blame everybody. I blame the newspapers for reporting on the candidates’ wealth and declaring it news. How about giving equal coverage to the candidates running who don’t have silver spoons in their mouths? I blame Springfield for allowing our campaigns to be financed with ridiculous […]
