Western Illinois hayride accident kills one, injures 17

Near NAUVOO, Ill. — The overturning of a hayrack ride in rural Illinois Saturday night results in one woman killed with at least 17 injuries being reported.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday night, the driver of a green John Deere tractor was pulling a rack wagon as a part of a hayrack ride. At some point, the driver “lost control and ran off the right side” of the road onto an incline. Statements taken by Illinois State Police reveal that the tractor and wagon would end up sliding down a ravine. As a result, there was an ejection of the driver and multiple passengers. This was in Hancock County in west-central Illinois near Nauvoo.

Capt. Jon Dively Jr. would tell a reporter at WGEM-TV in Quincy that a 32-year-old old Hamilton woman was the lone casualty.

The ride was a part of a family gathering. The ride would have three adults and 16 children between the ages of 1 and 12 onboard. All but two people would be taken to a hospital with varying grades of injuries. Police state that one of the children did suffer serious injuries.

The 41-year-old tractor driver would receive a traffic citation from the Illinois State Police for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

According to state police investigators, the tractor was “undersized” to handle the capacity load for the ride.
