HARRISTOWN — Parts of Harristown are under a boil water advisory after a water main break, according to Village President Misty Peters.

Village officials had not said Sunday when repairs would be completed or when the advisory could be lifted.

The advisory affects the following areas:

  • All residents on Indus Drive
  • All residents east of U.S. Route 36
  • West Main Street east of U.S. Route 36
  • Gravel Pit Road
  • Westway Drive
  • Anchor Road
  • Wyan Street
  • Wyckles Road

Residents in the affected area should use bottled water or bring tap water to a rolling boil for three to five minutes before using it for drinking or preparing food.

During a boil water advisory, untreated tap water should not be used for brushing teeth, making ice, preparing infant formula, washing fruits or vegetables, or cooking. Residents should also avoid using water from refrigerator dispensers and automatic ice makers unless it has been boiled first.

Water main breaks can reduce pressure in parts of a water system. A boil water advisory serves as a precaution while officials repair the system and test the water supply for possible bacterial contamination. The advisory generally remains in place until testing confirms the water is safe for normal use.

Harristown is located west of Decatur in Macon County and has a population of about 1,300 residents.

Village officials are expected to announce when the advisory has been lifted.
