An EXTREME HEAT WARNING will be in effect later this morning and will run through Monday night.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis announced the warning earlier this morning. It will be in effect beginning at 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday.

Dangerously hot conditions are expected with indices as high as 111.

Affected regions involve portions of south-central, southwest, and west-central regions of Illinois. On the Missouri side, east-central, northeast, and southeast regions are in the impact zone.

Illnesses as a result of high outdoor temperatures will increase significantly during extreme temperature and high humidity events.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis advises of preparedness and precautionary actions:

  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room.
  • Stay out of the sun.
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
  • When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
  • To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
  • Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1 in the event of a heat stroke.
