Why Nobody Trusts the News: Isaac Saul Andrew Heaton, Isaac Saul
SPRINGFIELD — Perry County has been given a tentative property assessment equalization factor of 1.0158 for taxes payable in 2026, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue.
The equalization factor, also called the multiplier, is used to make property assessments fair and consistent among Illinois counties. State law requires property to be assessed at one-third of market value. The multiplier helps adjust counties that fall above or below that level.
For Perry County, assessments are at 32.81% of market value based on sales from 2022, 2023 and 2024. Last year’s factor was 1.0000.
The tentative number can still change if county review board actions or new data show the assessment level should be adjusted. A public hearing will be held 20 to 30 days after the tentative factor is published in a county newspaper.
Officials say the multiplier does not automatically raise or lower tax bills. Local taxing bodies set tax rates each year. An individual property owner’s share depends on the assessed value of the property.
