NOKOMIS — It took an hour-long executive session of the Nokomis City Council to decide the fate of one of its police officers.
The council met in a special meeting on Friday, which immediately went into executive session upon the meeting’s start.
Friday’s meeting was pushed up from a meeting that was previously planned for Tuesday.
The closed session rationale related to 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1) to consider appointments, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the City.
The council would reconvene at 5:30 p.m.
A motion was made to terminate K9 Officer Nathan Brookshire with immediate effect and with a written order. The vote was unanimous.
Brookshire has been the subject of public scrutiny since a June 17 incident at Casey’s General Store. Brookshire, according to several witness statements, was heavily intoxicated and in uniform. He had pulled his Taser mistakenly instead of his wallet. Brookshire received relief for the remainder of his shift. He would further be placed under supervisory oversight the following day.
Chief of Police Earin Land would tender his resignation on July 1. He would cite in his resignation letter that the department was “too far gone.”
Brookshire remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police, which can choose to hand down criminal charges if they so wish.
