NOKOMIS — A Nokomis Police Department officer is under supervisory oversight as the officer returns to duty. This comes following an incident last week.

City officials are aware of an incident on June 17 at the Casey’s General Store in downtown Nokomis. The officer would later receive relief from duties for the remainder of the evening. This was imminent for the remainder of that shift.

At this time, there has been no final determination of the circumstances of the incident. It remains under internal review.

Because this is an active internal review and there is currently no final determination, city officials are declining to release the name.

Meanwhile, city leadership is calling for higher standards of professionalism, on duty and off.

“As Mayor, I expect our police officers to meet the highest standards of professionalism, judgment, and public trust,” said Nokomis Mayor Dylan Goldsmith. “This matter will not be ignored, minimized, or prejudged. If the facts show that corrective or employment action is warranted, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with city policies, applicable law, and any collective bargaining obligations.”

Mayor Goldsmith would also note that the completion of the internal review will be fair and based on facts, rather than rumor or speculation.

In addition, Goldsmith added that additional information may be provided when appropriate. It will be consistent with personnel privacy requirements, applicable law, and the integrity of the ongoing review.
