HILLSBORO — A machinery-related accident late last week at the Deer Run Mine in Hillsboro resulted in a fatality.

Montgomery County Coroner Randy Leetham would issue a confirmation Monday as a work-related fatality. It would also receive confirmation in a recorded report by the Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA). MSHA is a division of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, March 5, at 1:20 p.m.

Further details surrounding the cause of the accident are not immediately known.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page revealed the identity of the individual who died in the incident as Jessie Smith. That campaign has already raised nearly $23,000 out of a goal of $35,000. The goal intends to pay Smith’s funeral expenses and help support his girlfriend Toree and children Mikayla and Hudsen.

Foresight Energy owns the Deer Run underground coal mine facility.
