FARMERSVILLE — The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced the replacement of the bridge decks on the overpasses at Virden Avenue and North 33rd Avenue over Interstate 55 in Montgomery County. Closure of the bridges will be necessary while the improvements are being made. Work begins today, Tuesday, April 1.

In addition to the bridge closures, nighttime lane closures on Interstate 55 will be necessary. Other improvements include new concrete at the bridge approaches and new guardrails. Benefits from the project include providing a smoother driving surface and additional road durability. The improvements are expected to be completed at the end of October.

Motorists wanting to cross the bridge will need to use an alternate route. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

The work comes as part of Rebuild Illinois. Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly nine million square feet of bridge deck as part of the program, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation.
